automotive paint for guitar, prep?

So I can't just primer the bare wood, scotch brite it, and apply another coat of primer until the pores are smooth?

I have a fair amount of Nason products left over from a couple of vehicle paint jobs I did, so that is what I plan to use.

Auto paint is the best way to go if you want high gloss and high durablilty. I painted cars for more than 20 years so guitars are cake. I use automotive 2k urethane primer on the bare wood. 3 coats or so. Let it cure good.(At least overnight, the longer the better though) Depending on how rough the body is you can sand it with 180 -220 and reprime then you can wetsand it with 400 then 600 then spray the base. Then the clear. Heres the last guitar I did with the left over paint from the last car I did (68 Camaro)

Nice....what color is that Kramer?
Burnt Orange?

Looks bad ass!!

Thanks. The guitar and the car are the same color, just the car is in natural light and the guitar in under artificial light. The color is a GM color that they use on the new Vettes. (forget the name at the moment)

Atomic Orange Metallic, nice color for that Kramer!!, and the quarter of that Camaro Conv. looks good as well!!, All of this time,,auto finishes, I could have been doing this along time ago!!

Anybody use NCT clearcoat?? That was one of my faves in the auto world, extremely durable. My guess is most use the reg DAU clear, easiest to work with.

It's probably sunset orange metallic. I would know because I just used the same color on my K5 blazer and might also use the left over for this guitar project.

bicycle paint...no real prep...some tape...no skill...but that is only if you hope to sell them for $25k a piece at some point in the future.

Isn't that dangerous to shoot that stuff without a mask? My Granfather, uncle, and I used to restore classic and muscle cars but we hired a painter. He never wore a mask...is now nearly incapacitated from lung damage.

Great color btw!

It's a $80,000 booth very little overspray. And yes it is dangerous. I paint 3-4 guitars a year and my sons truck was the first thing I had painted in 5 years so I don't think I'm gonna keel over from it anytime soon. When I painted every day I always wore a respirator .

80K downdraft booth, HVLP sytem, you still need a respirator, take care of yourself, that shit catches up to you, didnt know we had so many paint people here, kinda cool, cool Blazer BTW!!!

Yeah it is Atomic Orange.
One of the reasons I got out of paint and body after 20+ years is because I have a bad reaction to isosyanates (main ingredient in auto clear and primer) after to much exposure. It builds in up your system because your body can't process it and after a while it makes you sick when your exposed to it. I started having panic attacks and asthma attacks in the night. It really fucks with your nervous and respiratory system. I only paint a few times a year now and always use a fresh charcoal respirator and I'm OK. That along with welding smoke will put you in an early grave.

+10000

That's why I stay in the office

I remember that pic of you painting with no respirator... :loco:

We got a guy at work that sprays like that and has been painting like that for the last 6 years where I work..
Last year Osha Came in while he was painting and we got fined 6k
And he still sprays like that...
One night I stayed over and he was there and didnt think anyone was there.. And I look in on him and he is painting like that with a Saint Pauli Girl beer in his hand

And GM Sunset Orange Metallic is darker and deeper color than the color in the pics above...But GM is good for just changing the name of the colors instead of changing the actual colors

I shit you not, I knew a guy that painted without a respirator and smoked cigarettes at the same time, but he was carefull not to get ashes in the paint, no joke, odd thing is he passed away several years ago.
