Curious on people's thoughts that have bought either of the units or if they have tried both and which they preferred or have researched.

I guess that depends on whether you are looking for quality or not quality?
Are you looking for amp sims presented as such, or very high level effects?
Is this a serious question?

Yeah you have to really think about that you need...For me the H8000, although it's a great piece of gear isn't intended for guitar only, so it delivers so much more than you will ever need! The Axe FX II delivers great effects and very good amp sims. I also have an Axe FX II and it's a really nice piece of gear. If you want to use the the processors for guitar only, I would go with the Axe FX, if you would do a lot more with it, then the Eventide will be the way to go.

I have to disagree with you DominiK.
And understand this is not aimed at you in any way but at the general Axe community.

The H8000 is a arguably the finest sounding effects unit ever made and absolutely the most power ever handed to the user. The Axe is a pretender not only as an amp but as an effects box. If you listen with your ears instead of someone else's mouth you will hear for yourself that these two items are not in the same league. Those that claim with lemming foolishness or intended misdirection notwithstanding.
Anyone who actually compares these units can not claim otherwise without lying. One is lush the other cartoonish. I understand that his 'flaw' may in fact be a benefit to some.

I dont care what anyone uses.

The 'this tool vs that tool' argument is old and tired but I have had enough of the axe is as good as an Eventide argument. For some time I've just let it go. Fools talking to fools... However it is not fools talking to fools. Its really liars talking to potential fools isn't it.

These items ARE NOT EQUIVALENT IN ANY MANNER. Use YOUR OWN EARS or be a fool.
Those who started this at the companies website were called out and some actually made the comparison and stated that they were wrong and that these items are in truth NOT in the same league after all - woohh what a surprise! I'm shocked ! Really, is it possible - 'say it ain't so Joe!'

Sorry guys but Your fuckin 'behringer' is NOT a NEVE ! Get it? I dont care how loud you wish it were it is NOT. Get past it. Have fun with YOUR choice and shut the fuck up about everything else. Again I do not care what wrench you fix your toilet with. Just STOP LYING.

To the OP are you looking for sim or Fx? Both- go get an Eventide and Kemper.
Any direct question? Your shooting too wide here.

Vitriol aside, I agree with him. There's no comparison.

Tony, is that you? ;)

Rezamatix - Yea need my first cup of coffee...oh well...

Its just gotten way out of hand for me recently. I see this all over he web. Its absurd. No one claims their toyota is equivalent to an Austin Martin, Bentley etc. To do so would be laughable.
Why this particular community does this is seems an aberration. They loose credibility by doing this. I know for a fact that they have turned a lot of potential customers away and have lost sales because of behavior in this and the dreaded 'K' issue.

I promise that my responses to this issue at Rig Talk will now be post rant.

Lester, no its not. I helped develop the 4000 series, Orville series, Eclipse and H8000 series while at Eventide. I was the alg/preset designer and built the bulk of the factory library.

This.

While I was there the audio division was a small tight group.
He was not part of that group.
I dont know him or what he was doing.
I did talk to him once long after any fact.
Why?

Get the Axe-II , plenty of pros are using it to replace 95% of their effects(Lifeson,Vai, Petrucci etc...).

These guys could obviously use anything they want.

You will have a blast with the amp tones as well if you choose to use them.

poophead is obviously a troll

Yes Bytor I am a troll and you are a fount of wisdom.
True to form dude, true to form.

Loophead... I totally understand where you are coming from on. There are biased opinions on both sides (but the biggest bias seems to be on the AXEFX side) and all that does is create an absolute mess of things as the rhetoric and exaggerations increase on both sides. I am definitely one of the people who will never support the AXEFX because of how the company has behaved in addition to how the company has allowed its online community to behave... count me out. It may be a great piece of gear, but its still just a piece of gear. If people want to wade into those waters, good for them and I hope they find what they are looking for.

MichaelG,
Yes. And you are not alone. I've heard from lots. PITA as the Axe is not a bad box. I understand folks finding something cool and wanting to shout it up. But to go past a reasonable line into out and out chicanery, either by being a misinformed soul (not having DONE the work yourself) or out and out lies is foolhardy. How might I believe that the unit will do its stated aim (sim an amp with feeling and dynamics) if all its users spout inanities about secondary issues (its better than or equivalent to 'X'). Too much of that seems odd at best, planed at worst. I believe we need as a society to vote with our wallet. It is the only way the proverbial 'they' understand. If in life you find some corporate or individual entities actions counter to your aim as a human being. Go elsewhere with your cash. M2C

Rez. I disagree somewhat with you, but cool - enjoy it. I dont say its not a nice/useful device. Do you own an Eventide? If not then why do you need to state what IT is as a derogatory aside - do you see 'that part' of my aim here? It fits 'you' - great. Thats what is important. Not some abstracted conflict.

and yet MAJOR artists use it as an effects rack. You really think Alex Lifeson and his crew don't know sound? Petrucci? Vai? These guys don't know effects? Maybe they don't have enough money for the real deal. Yep, that's probably it so they settle for the "cartoonish" alternative.

But seriously, why is it you think these guys do that? Convenience? I am being sincere here. I listed three guys but there are a whole bunch of top level dudes using it. Is it more guitar oriented effect wise?

Rez -Yup. Although with two engines in the Eclipse, Orville and H8000 one can avoid lags when needed but useful point. Again what are ones needs? There are many issues with what ones choice may be for 'your' fit in any gear. All valid. All should be investigated and weighed. For the OPs hunt understand that the pedals and the Eclipse are not the same 'sound' as the two units he mentioned. For what he mentioned I will point out that the two engine vs one engine is a VERY valuable enhancement. More than just a more power, more I/O issue IMO.

Zentman,
Your not Lifeson, Pettrucci or Via. Their choices and needs for their live rig are just that - their choice and needs not yours or others. To assume more is misguided. I never said they dont know sound, whats in their wallet or what they 'settle for'. Your comments are IMO aimed inappropriately - again IMO in a desire which looks to misinform.

Yes possible convenience. You would need to ask them. I never said the Axe is not a nice piece of kit. I said it is not an Eventide. Is it a good rig for gigging or recording? Of course. To say otherwise would be ridiculous. My issue is not about what it is but what it is not. About how the community has historically acted across the web. Repeatedly stating misinformation which IMO is always unhelpful instead of being a bit more objective. Get it? No one really cares what you or I use. No one should choose with your or my ears. Get it? If it is worth investigating, then investigate it. If it looks the the tool for you than buy it. What do I care if you feel its 'more' guitar oriented?

You made a definitive statement. Get it? You speak in absolutes not opinion. Get it? I never said you don't know your stuff nor that I was a Vai or Petrucci either. Get it? I simply questioned your derogatory characterization of the Fractal product presented as fact by offering examples of folks that use said cartoonish sounding product who have the ears, the money, and the professional and technical guidance of those that assist their endeavors to achieve the best sound they possibly can. Get it? I don't have to ask Mr Vai as he stated in an interview that he chooses what he chooses for the pristine sound. According to Alex Lifeson "The quality of all the effects is superb. There is great depth and transparency, and excellent imaging that makes listening with in-ear monitoring a wonderful aural experience." He fails to mention cartoonish though.

For what it's worth, I can say a original pod sounds better than a Marshall stack TO ME and I can be right because that's an opinion. I can not state that a pod is better than a Marshall stack and everybody who disagrees is trying to deliberately mis-inform. Hope that clears things up for you. Get it? :)

Zentman
Yes definitive. Again you've missed the point. I never said people are not using it to their benefit.
You dont like my language choice? Bummer. Not 'everybody' just a small vocal cadre with an odd agenda. All cleared up.

Truth! I love how they act like that while spreading all kinds of bs and sucking down every single line that comes off their forums. The battles of Axe vs Kemper are hilarious and even the Co. owner gets involved creating some need to berate individuals. That behavior is passed around like a bad std at so many forums by Fractal fanbois. It gets real old. I usually tell them STFU and they gang bang like they have nothing else to do with their time. It's very weird behavior. Worse I have ever seen from any product. It's not even polarizing anymore.

I think the Axe is cool. I have their products (MCF Ultra and former Standard) so they got plenty of my cash. I have a Kemper and a few others. I have used many Eventide units in the past and the Axe Fx is just a smudge of what those Eventide units can do. We also use Lexicon rack reverbs which just level anything the Axe have internally. The stuff in the Axe Fx is useful but its just idiotic stupid insane for those forum folks to trash other Eventide, Lexicon and other professional racks. Axe Fx is a model of that stuff not the real thing. It's quite a bit different.

Just curious, you sold the Axe II but kept the Ultra? Was it a money thing or sound?
