I could do a ROM dump I am quite sure, but I never would.
Cliff when to a LOT of TIME and EFFORT and tooling to build
this thing. Doing that would be like a slap in the face to him.

You have one of these gizmos?

You should let me swing by and check it out. :)

Ok...I have been listening to the rock mp3 that was posted and yes the effects sound very good but not sure if the backing was created with the axe-fx or not.

It sounds direct as stated that it was, not that it is bad but it has that box sound to it that direct brings. The lower notes do sound better than any Line6 direct but mic'd with a tube power amp I could get this tone. I am thinking that there is some mastering compression on this as well.

I would love to demo this to get a grasp of the feel.

I hear what you're saying and to a point I agree. I have the standard Axe Fx and I fuckin' love it. That being said, I'm not into the direct recordings of it either. To me, the technology isn't there yet to record a direct tone that even gets in the ballpark of properly mic'd up cab. I think the Axe Fx does way better direct than anything else I've heard but I still prefer it through a tube power amp and cab.

It's that combination that I run it through and it simply blows my mind. The fx are great but they're just gravy to me. I have a little six space rack with a Furman, the Axe Fx, and a Peavey Classic 50/50 and I run it into a Mesa Recto 4x12. With that configuration it simply stuns.

I'm one of the world's biggest Mesa nuts and I've owned a lot them. I have a real soft spot for Mark IV's and Rectos. I've owned two different Mark IV's, a Rectoverb, an old two channel Dual Recto, a newer three channel Dual, and a Triaxis / 2:90 rig. The Axe Fx through tube power and my Recto 4x12 cops all of them. It has the feel, the tone, and tiny nuances that each of those rigs had and then some. I have haven't spent that much time tweaking them. Hell, one of the factory presets (I forget the name) ran through my rig sounded and felt so close to my Triaxis / 2:90 rig that I almost shat myself.

I've never been that big of a Marshall fan but I do use a pretty scary range of tones for the different projects I'm in and I'm even warming to Marshalls.

I won't even begin to talk about what this thing is compared to my Vetta. It's not even funny. The closest thing I've had to the Axe Fx for versatility and tone was my Randall RM4 and RT 2/50. It had some things going for it but still didn't quite do it for me.

I measure how cool my Axe Fx is in the number of days since I've felt any amp GAS at all. I went from swapping rigs every four or five months to not even dreaming of anything else for quite some time.

Now THAT is a testimonial!

Can't wait til StevieRaveOn gets the nod on his Ultra, so I can start learning the nuances of this beast!

STOP IT!!!!!!

I'm already looking at what to save up for next.

:)

(no the Mark IV will NOT be leaving the stable again)

I'm not saying it's perfect for everyone but for me it is. I play in a fuckin' crazy assortment of cover and original projects ranging from modern country and blues to thrash and nu metal. I use just as crazy an assortment of tones.

I've always had a really tough time balancing the tonal needs of all my hired gun type projects to the needs of my own material (which is my absolute passion). For my stuff the perfect amp rig would be a Mesa Mark clean tone, a Modern mode Recto tone for rhythm chugging, and a Mark lead tone for that creamy chewy lead vibe. At one point I used to carry a Rectoverb and Mark IV around to get my tones (with a rack of effects and some pedals up front of course).

Unfortunately my shit doesn't pay the bills so I ended up taking a lot of whore jobs playing whatever was necessary to fund my shit. I ended up going with the Randall MTS stuff which was great for all the hired stuff (I had a bunch of different modules) but I was 100% with the Recto module and I couldn't find that sweet Mark IV type lead in any of them. That and my six space rack weighed like 3.5 Oprahs.

I ended up going with a Vetta / Variax combination which was cool for awhile. With the different guitar models, and instant tuning changes and shit it was awesome for the hired gun shows. Unfortunately even though you can do a ton of different sounds they all sound like fake shit. I was pulling my hair out.

Then I heard about the Axe Fx and after some sweet clips from Mr. Riffy, I decided to give it a shot. I've never looked back. I got it and set it up with the Classic and Recto cab and it's been rockin' since. I ended up selling off everything else I had. In fact the only thing I don't rely on the Axe Fx for tones live is my Heil Talkbox and a Dunlop 95q out front. I even liked the tones of the Axe's wah but I just couldn't get over not having a switchless wah.

Digwhisper (deadringer to me) will make you cream your pants for one of these things. He originally got me interested in it 8 months ago on a Vetta forum we both posted on.

That post isn't making Monday seem to get here any quicker deadringer. :aww:

You're probably one of the biggest amp whores I can think of. Stop. :P

:)

just prepareing for my back-up for the Mark IV. ;)

I'm not that bad....well.... :D

All this started with actually trying new things, then found the Mark IV, sold it to get my Jugg, and been working my way back to it. Trading up, and up.....techincally I only have $200 invested out of pocket. ;)

My Goal:

Mark IV - tube
Randall - SS
Axe-FX or Vetta - Digital

done.....2/3 of the way ;)

But next on the hit list is gonna be a Mesa half back cab....if it kills me.

What could you possibly need a backup for?

I'm also starting to REALLY love R1 cranked. I feel naked with anything else--including the lead channel.

I hear ya man!

I have gone through so much gear in the last few years it is scary. Since making the decision to keep my amps to a minimum, I have been chasing my tail for a setup that would provide:

high gain marshall (thrashy tones)
high gain Mark series (Metallica type tones)
high gain modern (rectoish)
SS high gain (Dime and death metal type tones)
great clean (jc120ish)

I have come very close with a few setups, but always end up with 3 amps. Nothing cops Mark series tones but Marks in my experience, but it apears the Axe Fx can do the job.

I am actually a fan of modeling in general and think some of th line 6 stuff, HD147 in particular, is pretty damn good.

I am also a HUGE fan of the Egnater modular gear. I think it is awsome, but still missing a couple things in my wish list.

Then I discovered the Rocktron Prophesy II which is the best all in one unit I have come accross to date! Hell, I even bought a Mesa Studio and Marshall JMP-1 to see if I needed them to cover Markish and high gain Marshall tones. Turns out, I get VERY close with the Prophesy (not dead on, but very close).

The Prophesy II is a few steps ahead of the Line 6 stuff IMHO (I know it isn't a true modeling amp, but the parametric EQ's really provide similar flexibility if you know what you are looking for). And it sounds and feels more tube like.

Given what I am learning about he Axe FX, it looks like it is leaps ahead of the Prophesy II, so I am excited as hell to try it out. Plus it looks like it gets ALL the tones I am after.

I have a VHT 2/50/2 and just bought a Randall RT2/50 to try out with it (actually, I will try the Randall with the Prophesy II first). I really like the idea of being able to switch power tubes. I tend to be a 6L6 guy, but 34's just sound/feel right for certain things. I actually saw someone recently unload their 2/50/2 in favor of th eRandall which surprised me.

The one good thing that has come from all my amp whoring is that I know EXACTLY what I like...couldn't have said that a few years ago. I thought I know, but wasn't positive. When all is said and done, if I could get everything I am looking for from one unit and a power amp, I would be fucking stoked!

Oh yeah, sorry about that. I forgot... ;)

I'd love an RT2/50, but they are like £1000 here!

I cry a little on the inside... a trip to NY maybe coming my way soon...
