Axe Fx Vs + Poweramp Vs. 1 Boutique Amp

I am looking at the Axe Fx, I don't want to start a new thread on the whole Axe since there are a lot of them already.

I am considering for 3000 getting a Axe Fx + Fryette Poweramp (Is this the same as the VHT poweramps which I heard so many good things about) or getting a Head (PT-100, XTC, Marsha)

I already have a Diezel Einstein that I love...

I really want something to complement the Diezel the most. I play a wide variety of styles. Mainly Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, and besides samhill's youtube video I haven't really found great heavy tones from the Axe Fx.


By the way I live in Argentina, and can't test either. Going with a head is a guaranteed combination, since I know it will sound killer, I have my doubts on the Ultra though....

I just sold my Diezel Herbert which has been my favorite amp for nearly 4 years because I can pretty much get a similar tone that I like better out of the Axe/Fryette 2/50/2. Whether it's right for your or not - who knows - but you can definitely get great metal tones out of the axe/fryette combo.

That's Ola Englund from Feared. You can't base any decisions on his clips though. He has the Psychodave effect on amps; he could make one of those cigarette-pack amps sound good.


To the OP, it depends on what your needs are. I would gauge whether you want a bunch of tones at your disposal that are very close to the real thing, or if you want a killer tube head that delivers timeless tone. Do you record a lot? The axe could be used to blend amp models with your Diezel and as a killer effects unit for the Diezel.
I think most people overlook using the unit as an effects unit. Tough choice for me.

Yes you can use "the Psychodave" effect imo, they bring out what the amp can do when you put the time into it If they make it sound good then it IS good

If my house was on fire and i could save either the Mesa 2:90/Axe-Fx or the Fortin Cali mod.......................The Axe-Fx is getting fried and me and Fortin are toasting some marshmellows.

That's exactly what I do with with my Axe Ultra/2502 and it works great. My main tone is a Bad Cat Hot Cat 50R then I use the Axe/2502 to for complimentary tones. Right now I'm using Diezel, Deliverance, SLO tones for high gain. I have been able to set it and forget it once I've dialed in the amp tones. I wish I had more time to tweak and play with the fx in it though.

If you plan to use it for adding additional tones to your current setup, I don't think you can go wrong really - tons of possibilities.
