While everyone is raving about the Axe fx i find it about impossible to find good clips recorded with that device. I mean there are some ok clips but nothing that really makes me shout Heureka that sounds like the shit. To be honest i always find the Axe clips unappealing sterile sounding, overly compressed and overloaded with effects. But Line 6 or Guitar Rig on the other hand
i find loads of really good recordings. That doesn`t mean that there are not a few good axefx clips out there but not a lot to my knowledge. Have never played an Axe so i am not an expert here but as mentioned what i can tell from internet soundclips the axe isn`t exactly the tone machine it`s said to be.
On the other hand there are not that much killer recordings made with amps as far as to my knowledge either (i am not speaking of professional recordings- just about the home made you tube clips). There is one guy who uses a Palmer PD which gets really top notch recordings. But for the average Joe, not having the possiblity to record in a sound studio, Line seems to be the best choice.
Just my 2 cent. I know that really sounds ABSOLUTELY crazy, so here is the proof of the pudding:

So what do i think of when i am talking of really good sound: Andy Timmons, Bonamassama and Vaughan+ Malmsteen yes you heard right, but i find he has some really good recordings with regard to tone as for example this one:
