AxeFX / M4 wiring schematic

I just ordered a AxeFX Ultra from Rob @ Tone Merchants. Was curious the best way to set it up w/ the Eggie M4 so I can switch it in and out so I can use both the internal amp sims and also the Eggie M4. I will be using it with my VHT 2/90/2 w/ 6550s and Eggie 4x12 cabinet.

I'm sure Dave will chime in but I've asked him about this very same wiring scheme. He told me the best thing to do was to use a switcher and put the front end of the Axe in a loop and the M4 in a separate loop. What I don't understand with this routing is how you'd be able to get Axe stomp sims in front of the M4.

I'm going to set it up as a WDW and will probably just use the 4 cable method suggested by Fractal and add a feed from the Output2 Right (Axe effects loop) to my dry amp/cab. Then, you just need to create presets where the Axe routes the signal to the proper outputs with or without the Axe amp sims.

Could you use a Axess Electronics GRX4 to make it work?

I've been using a MPXG2 w/ my M4 for a long time. I would just run the M4 in the "insert" of the MPXG2 and disable the insert if I wanted to use the gain effects in the G2. I thought that AxeFX could do the same. I didn't have any ground loops with my M4 / MPXG2 set up this way. That is if I ran the M4 with the ground lift switch on.

I would like to be able to use the stomp boxes before the M4 like dfratolli is doing. My setup would be routed "logically" like this in my mind:

Gtr -> pedalboard ( wireless - wah - sparkle drive - microvibe - bb preamp ) -> out of pedalboard -> in of AxeFX

AxeFX in -> stomp boxes in AxeFX -> out of AxeFX -> M4 in

M4 out -> in of AxeFX -> noise gate of AxeFX -> chorus / flanges / modulated effects -> split to Delay and Verb -> combine back to stereo outs of AxeFX -> VHT 2/90/2.

I'm not looking to do a W/D/W setup here. I've been really happy doing it this way with the Lexicon for years. I've had no tone issues doing it this way. But I want to make sure I'm not doing anything "stupid" with the AxeFX since I don't have the experience you do with it.

Man that sounds awesome Eric. I can't wait for your report on how it sounds. What stomp box models in the AXEFX were you most interested in? If I did this, I would do it for those and the delay effects and use my MOD 50 for the amp tones.

That's my plan man. I am mainly using it for effects (phase, flange, delay, reverbs, etc.) Basically a drop in replacement for my Lexicon MPXG2. I want to use a few pedal effects like a Octafuzz, Univibe, Phaser, tube screamer clone, any fuzzes.

I switched to my Lexicon MPXG2 a while back using it more for all the effects I could, and I am glad I did. I now only have a few pedals on my pedalboard, and I do everything else through midi. I plan on using the M4 as my main tones for sure, and then maybe use a amp sim here and there. I also plan on using it for recording. I'm curious to see if I can use my M4 with the poewr amp and cab sims! Could be a really interesting way to track along w/ my Grendel Dead room .

I just got it today...And this is gonna take some serious "play time" to get used to. Not in a bad way, just in a my head hurts at this point in time way. I need to really sit down and read the manual a few times, but i'll get it. I mastered the Lexicon MPXG2, and I LOVE that thing. But damn...the effects in the AxeFX are stellar from what I've heard so far. The presets suck, and as far as I can tell do NOT give it justice for what it can do.

But I've got a guitar boner, and yes my AxeFX is happy to see me

I ended up selling the Ultra and then buying a Standard, and then selling that.

For the amp sims, I liked it, but didn't love it. My M4 was WAY more what I wanted vs the amp sims. The Effects were spectacular!!! But, I felt I could get enough of what I wanted w/ my Lexicon MPXG2s (one in parallel, one in series) that I ended up selling both AxeFX's. I've used MPXG2s for YEARS, and just know how to program them so well, that I just didn't want to get rid of them.

But, the effects are just downright amazing.

Yeah, I'm still on the fence a little bit. I found a guy here in Toronto who has an Ultra and brought my CAA 3+ SE and VHT 2502 to compare. The Ultra is a very cool box, but I'm worried that I'll have "not close enough" issues later down the line. I'm still thinking about buying it for the FX alone but I only had enough time to check out the stock presets and the few that the guy who owned it created (he's a wicked jazzer so his style didn't exactly match mine).

Presets alone wont tell you anything, I find the presets vanilla but the unit is capable of a ton more. Trust us on this.

The Axe is an amazing "bit of kit" as they say across the pond. I've got an Egnater M4 and an AxeFX Standard. They're like my own children. It's like Sophie's Choice every time I have to decide which one not to play. I love what I'm getting out of the Axe right now. I run it into a SS amp and when I get a Mesa jones going, I plug into the Axe. I was skeptical at first but the Axe may be the most impressive piece of gear I've ever owned. There is nothing out there that will give you all the options in the Axe. There's nothing to compare it to.

i didn´t understand that right, i think...your guitar goes let´s say to a lehle loioper...from there send one to the axe input...and then you go from send two to the m4 input and from there to the axe´s return...??? and i guess from the axe´s outputs to the power amp...
so you can choose either going guitar-axe-power amp or guitar-m4-return axe-power amp, right?
but how could you use the axe´s front pedals sims in front of the m4 then...???
did i miss sthg here...?
are the loopers return1 and return2 left without connection?
