Ya might dig this. Not a heavy tune, it’s got more of a Sap/Jar Of Flies vibe.

I hadn’t written anything in a while and to get the juices flowing again I knocked this out in about 30 minutes one night and then spent 2 weeks destroying the mix that was near-perfect by the time I finished tracking everything. Last night I deleted every plugin and automation move in Logic and started fresh, then told myself I was going to put it out today and move the fuck on. The mix isn’t exactly how I want it, but fuck it.

Guitars were these two-

Hot Mod V2 is engaged with the Treble channel around 8. Any tonal changes during the song are my volume knobs on the guitars. I also used a DryBell Vibe Machine on one of the verse guitars. I used the 1960TV and Friedman Greenback 4x12 DynaCabs in my AxeFX, coming out of the Suhr RL. The lead is the Orville with an SD-1 in front of the amp.

The coolest thing about the electrics- there’s no EQ on the electrics in this mix, just a pinch of compression. Not even the usual hi/lo cuts. That wasn’t even intentional at the start, I just realized last night after 2 weeks of destroying the mix that they’re better off without any EQ at all.

Acoustic was my Breedlove W/ a 57 pointed at the 15th fret from 4” away with a shitload of EQ/compression. Drums are Superior Drummer 3 but I only used the raw drum sounds and did all the EQ/compression/reverb in Logic. Bass my was Spector into an Ampeg model, along with a tweaked DI.

A note about writing music in general-

I’ve seen on forums or heard from friends quite a bit over the years, “I just never have anything worth recording” and I really implore people to get out of the way of thinking. There’s absolutely nothing mind blowing about anything in this song, nothing that isn’t derivative of whatever came before it, nothing showing off technical chops, etc. If you wait around forever for something like that to fall out of your fingers you can have your entire life pass you by without having anything to show for the time you’ve spent with music.

Everything in this song is just the first idea that came to my mind when I was writing it, the main riff is something I’d consider a ‘throw away’ riff and I wouldn’t normally consider being ‘worth it’ to record, but I entertained the idea of doing so just long enough to get it recorded and then a whole song fell out of it. It’s not a statement on everything I’ve ever learned about music or a vehicle for every guitar trick I know, it’s just one out of the hundreds more I intend on writing and I get ample practice with songwriting, finding melodies and mixing in the process. So if you find yourself NOT recording music because you don’t think you’re doing anything interesting or original enough, you’re definitely not alone, but you ARE holding yourself back from progress.

Dude super cool! Man, makes me miss my custom shop Breedlove that got stolen a decade ago. Definitely has that AIC vibe but there’s a certain darkness to the tonality that reminds me of the early 2000’s bands I listened to. Drums sounded very good for not using a real kit - made me think I need to learn how to program them so I can expand my writing. Inspiring post my dude!
