I know the guy is doing the whole Van Halen thing in the first video, but I find it kind of pointless to make an amp demo video that has an overbearing effect like a phaser or wah running the entire time. They tend to come off more as a demo for the effect than the amp. IMHO, the only acceptable effects to use in an amp demo video are delay and/or reverb (as long as they are not too prominent).

The video I posted just has great sounding, pure organic tone.

I think the point of the first video is pretty clear. Van Halen tone sells amps. Put up any video where someone is getting the early VH tone and you see plenty of action in the thread. " Oh Man" " Damm that's the tone" etc etc. Whether you hate it or not doesn't mean squat to Suhr but I'm willing to bet they sell some amps because of it. 35 years later and it survived hair metal, survived grunge, rap metal, emo, and other crap trends and phases, and people are still chasing and spending for the VH tone.

I dig the latter 2 videos, the 1st one was ear piercingly trebly (treble was dimed, you can see it when they pan across the front of the amp).
The second SL68 video had the amp dialed in better IMO.

Yep. Didn't care for the clips from either amps.... The second clip of the SL68 was more my thing but still not something I'd be compelled to try especially at that price point.

Yeah man, I agree. But it's like the Rockstah modded amps. If you can't play like that it aint going to sound the same. There's a guy from SF named Terry Lauderdale. He was in a tribute band called "Hot for Teacher". I'm not sure if he still uses it or not, but that guy could nail VH with a Mesa Mark III. I'm sure it wouldn't be close enough for Nitro, but it was pretty damn close.

But when they get this amp home and realize that it isn't much gain and it reveals everything in their playing, and they don't sound like VH, that's when the disapointment set in. Fast forward........really good deal on an SL68 in the classifieds.


I love Al Estrada's playing. I've seen a bunch of clips and he's just killer.

Every clip that's posted regarding VH, there's always something "off" about it no matter what era it is. There's always something wrong with it. Wait, except Rockstah. And admittedly, he had that thing down. But you put the same setup in someone elses hands and it's going to sound different. Like I said earlier and it may have been in another thread. Rockstah made a clip with an Iphone app that sounded better than most people with their modded plexi trying to get that tone. Which goes to prove that he just has that playing style and his recording technique down. I like his mods and think they sound good. There's no secret to it. It's well documented. But unless you can play that VH style, it's not going to cop that Van Halen tone.

Schaf,the clip of the SL68 that Al posted sounds like Van halen II is what I said.It doesnt have the crunch thats on Van halen 1.Playing Van halen songs and achieveing Edwards tone are two different things.STYLE of playing and TONE are two different things.Equipment does matter.If I play though a clean amp its going to sound clean no matter how hard I pick same with a distorted amp.If it was in the fingers then each Van halen album would sound the same,which they dont.I own a modded plexi that was modded by Mark(Rockstah)and I achieve the same tone that Mark achieved,sounds the same.Equipment matters.

I concur the flanger negatively affects the tone but clearly Pete is having a blast and it's an ode to some guy from CA who has an iconic set of fx and tones.
