Schaf,the clip of the SL68 that Al posted sounds like Van halen II is what I said.It doesnt have the crunch thats on Van halen 1.Playing Van halen songs and achieveing Edwards tone are two different things.STYLE of playing and TONE are two different things.Equipment does matter.If I play though a clean amp its going to sound clean no matter how hard I pick same with a distorted amp.If it was in the fingers then each Van halen album would sound the same,which they dont.I own a modded plexi that was modded by Mark(Rockstah)and I achieve the same tone that Mark achieved,sounds the same.Equipment matters.

I understand the difference. But, you won't get the Van Halen Sound unless you have that playing style down. So I agree with you to a certain extent on the equipment. Of course it's not going to sound the same as on a clean amp. Most people are going to dial in an amp to the sound they like. But if you want the Van Halen I sound you have to have that technique or it won't sound like VHI. And you have to have the equipment that can get you there. I just figured you'd dispute the fact that Terry Lauderdale could get that sound with a Boogie, but he could get very close

But explain this to me. How could Rockstah get a better VH sound on an Iphone than most people can get out of a plexi modded for that tone? That's why I think one goes with the other. And, I guarantee that if Mark was playing that SL68 we would all be saying damn that sounds like VH1. And, I also think mark could get close with a stock Plexi cranked or a JCM 800 for that matter.

Not too hard to get that tone... there are a million ways to do it, including John's amp, which sounds killer. I don't understand why nitro insists on making it into rocket science, but it just ain't...

Im not making it into rocket science I just gave my opinion on Al's original clip that is sounds like the van halen II sound not van halen 1.Mark and I shared the same opinion on this subject.I guess we have are own opinions.I believe technique plays apart but equipment plays a bigger part.I would disagree that if Mark was playing a stock plexi or the SL68 that he could achieve VH1.Al is a very good player also and he is not achieveing the VH1 sound using the SL68.The amp has to have that gain structure to achieve that.Thats why Mark made the Mod5(with some tweaking) to achieve that sound or else why would he have bothered.Mark knew that a stock plexi couldnt achieve that tone(VH1).Mark and I had many conversations about this.

I dunno, man - I think technique plays a much bigger part than the gear, but that is just my opinion. I think with the right effects, production and playing, there are many amps that can get the VHI tone. Mark's mod 5 only has as much gain as a 2203, which isn't that much. Of course, for his recordings, he's cranking the gain and regular 2203 master and squashing the overall signal with a PPIMV to almost bedroom volume, which gives the feel and sound of more perceived gain. The amp won't feel as gainy if you take the PPIMV out of the circuit by cranking it that is for sure.

As far as the rocket science comment, I wasn't really referring to your comments here. I was referring to the fact that on many threads with VH1 style clips, you find that they aren't close enough and don't have enough gain while many others think they are spot on. That was what I meant by "rocket science". I happen to be one of those that thinks there is enough gain with a plexi squashed with a variac to hit VH1 tone if you have the chops... It's just something you and I (and many others) disagree on... Not really a big deal...

Sah5150, thats true on VH1 clips that are out there I dont believe the have the gain/crunch thats on VH1.Alot of guys tend to believe alot of the BS that the read or whats on the net when it comes to that sound instead of using there ears. Marks Mod 5 has the feel and tone to achieve that sound,im happy with the plexi he modded for me,alot of back and forth on the phone with Mark on that amp.

Thanks.....There were clips of my amp on Marks site(Rockstah site no longer) that Mark made,sounds the same.If it didnt sound the same you would know about it, believe me....
