Looking to pick up some somewhat decent powered monitors. Not really mixing on them just more for getting ideas down to rehearse with the band. I hate using headphones so i never end recording my ideas. Willing to spend 300-400 bucks. I do get a discount through my employer for m-audio stuff so if one their products is decent itd be great.

thanks
erik.

i have no complaints with my old style (they've since updated the design and specs of them) KRK Rokit 5 monitors. the Rokit 6 and 8 versions are even better if you can fit the larger size speakers on your desk and are willing to spend more $. I added a low buck powered iKEY audio sub to them and the setup has been far far better than the top of the line logitech speaker setup i had before it.

I compared the KRK Rokit series to a $1000 Genelecs (low-end Genelecs obviously)... Now... Either I'm fucking deaf, or they sound identical.
So yeah... Krk rokit's for like $500 a pair? Or Genelecs for $1000? The choice is clear... LOL! :D

I got a pair of "restock" KRK Rokit 5s from MF for 200 bucks total. They are treating me great! I'm going to be moving onto some 8s and the KRK subwoofer sometime this summer.

rockin KRK RP8s and a KRK S10 sub. They do use cheap Chinese capacitors in some of the stages of the amplifiers but that is easily repairable provided you can do those kind of repairs. I had to repair my sub but it works great now.

I have the Rokit 6 and IMO they're VERY well balanced. I track/mix/master with them and I haven't had to "retweak" my mixes after burning a few cd's to listen in other speakers and in my car.

Contrary to my cheap M-audio Bx5a which where TOO bright and I had to constantly re tweak my mixes because they were too dark.

I can believe it. I auditioned the KRK's against Genelecs, Dynaudio, Mackies and Yamaha. Yamaha's were in the same price-point as the KRK's but couldn't compare to them. The KRK's hung very comfortably with monitors costing 2.5x as much.

i researched alot of them too, and for the money the krk is a winner

THIS is what really counts - not how "good" they sound but that they translate well to a lot of other systems.

I used to be amazed at bottom heavy Hip Hop stuff - the Timbaland/Missy Elliot/ Aaliyah etc. it had tons of bottom end but you could play it back on anything and it would still sound good- hard to do that.

I have these... http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/B3031A.aspx I bought them for the Axe FX that I used to have. I had a local store order them in since they didn't stock them. We put them up against a lot of other monitors in the price range, and above, and they blew them all away, and had a lot more power. They are big speakers, but I am very happy with them.

My music tech teacher, who is a fantastic producer as well (has produced loaaads of stuff in his spare time, made quite a bit of money out of it too) recommends Genelec's. They sound great, although slighlty bass heavy to my ears, quite cheap apparently.

KRK Rockets I've heard great things about too.
