howdy gents

currently playing a LP custom with EMG81 in the bridge
It definately sounds good...I like this pickup in big guitars

Interested to see what the Bare Knuckle fans suggest?
Do they make a PU that's like a 'better emg81'?

any advice would be killer
cheers

Absolutety the Miracle Man. BKP's version of an EMG, but much wider frequency response and just sweeter sounding. If you like the EMG 81, you'll love the Miracle Man.

Does it have the same "small" low end of the EMG? One of the things I like about the 81 is it's tight, but it also has a very small sounding low end.

Try this. If you have an emg 85 in your neck pickup switch it to the bridge. Recently did this with my Hellraiser and its awesome. Much warmer sounding and over smoother.

I like emg85's in the bridge of thin guitars...they're too much in les paul bridge's IMO

too boomy

the miracle man has a bigger low end, but it's just as tight
not boomy at all
the painkiller is tighter, but much more middy
the miracle man sounds much closer to the emg 81, imo, especially on leads and harmonics
the solos definitely sound sweeter and way more organic, but with that weird EMG 81 hi fi clarity on fast leads
the painkiller is more raw sounding, like a duncan distortion without that midrange dirt

Is there a BKP that is like an EMG 85?

not really
some claim the miracle man is similar, but not for my ears (I had the 81, 85 and MM in the bridge position of the same guitar)
I found the holy diver to be a good replacement for the emg 85, but it's not as hot and it's much warmer
it has a similar voicing (lots of center and low mids, smooth high end) and gets a lot of benefit from boosting (more than the MM)
but that depends a lot on the amps too
for downtuned modern metal, the miracle man really shines
it gets really growly and grainy, the harmonics are amazing and sound fatter the louder you play

You think the Painkiller has more mids than the EMG 81? I think the 81 has a ton of upper mids as it is.

I love the Painkiller!!
But this is in a darker guitar tuned to drop C so
the upper mids and tightness really blend with the guitar and the Twin Jet.
I find the key to pickin' pickups is to really know the guitar characteristics
as well as amp/speaker tone. I never expect pickups to be a major change
just an additive to the goal.

Having both side by side MM/81 I disagree. The 81 is still more razor tight and sustains more. The MM is bigger as said and is more organic. If someone wants 81 tightness I would bet the PK is closer.....

Are you still liking the Miracle Mans in the EBMM Petrucci now that you've been using them for a while? I am down between the Miracles and Motor City Solution set. Thoughts?

What do you guys think of the Cold Sweat set overall, and how would you describe their sound?

I like them.......I would classify them as good.....decent.....well-balanced.....be all end all? No way.....my favorite pickup? Nah....try the Motor City's and get back to me...

I refuse to try the Motor City pickups. The fact that they stole Tim's ideas leaves a sour taste in my mouth. All the way down to the distressed covers. At least come up with something a little original.

Who stole it from seymour duncan and dimarzio, who stole it from seth lover? Im not buying a chevy cause they stole the assembly line idea from henry ford. Motorcity pups are not a rip off of bareknuckles either. Back to the topic, i too wanted to buy a pup that was as close as possible to a 81 and tim steered me away from the miracle man and toward the painkiller. I did get either because i wanted a nickle cover and that would have taken 3 weeks. Plus the motor city was cheaper and made in my country. Nothing against bareknuckle pups they sound good. I do think they should change the name of the miracle man pup because everyone thinks ozzy ,zakk, emg.
