Bare Knuckle pups and Diezel Hagen & VH4

I have to revise my opinion a bit.

The SH6 set sounds great in my Ibanez Prestige.
The Evolution set didn´t sound as close.

I had Nailbombs in a Driskill that sounded amazing on mid to high gain amps. Only reason I sold it was the neck was too big, looking to get more BK's, either another set of Nailbombs or some Painkillers.

try before you buy, i have a herbert. I bought a set of warpigs a while ago, i really didnt like it with my herbert.

I just recently got a herbert what kind of pickups do you like with yours? Does it favor low to mid output pick ups as well or can it keep up with the active pickups?

I am trying to form an opinion regarding the different BKP's and wanted to know if the observations you shared about the various combinations of pu's and amps are based on "in a band situation" or playing at home?
What style of music do you play?
I've used my Diezels in the following contexts:
- jamming
- gigging
- recording
- ISO cabbed and open cabbed, at full throttle volumes

The VH4 responded wonderfully well to Mules, RiffRaffs, and Emeralds. The Hagen has sounded outrageous with Painkillers, BlackDogs and RiffRaffs. Overall, there's very little that doesn't sound good with these amps. I do have another axe loaded with MiracleMans and I'd have to say, no. They're not as good as the aforementioned pups in the Diezel context.

I hope this answers your questions.

Are there any others with the Herbert, whom have experimented with BKP? I would really like to hear other opinions of mid to low output pickups.

Todd Duane (Ampaddict on here) uses Rebel Yells in LP's into a variety of amps.
Here's a short vid of him playing a MK2 Herb w/ the RY's. I think the Rebel's are mid-higher out put.

Any video of him w/ the LP will should have the Rebel's in it.

To the OP, just send Tim an email at tim@bareknucklepickups.co.uk - let him know the guitar you're using, the style of music you're playing, and the amp(s) used and he'll tee one up for ya and make it right. Simple.

Just commit to it. You won't regret it.

Uncle Mo

(PS - that being said, I think the RR, Mules, Emeralds, and BlackDogs sound best with my VH4 and Hagen)

I swapped the HFS/VB out of my PRS CU24 for a set of Rebel Yells due to the fact that the HFS sounded like mud with any level of gain in the Herbert. My mistake was replacing the HFS with the Rebel Yell. It's not a knock on BK pups, rather they were too hot (15k) like the HFS pups. I ended up dropping a Godwood set (bridge 9.7k) in and couldn't be happier with the tones.

I have a Holy Diver set on the way for my Les Paul. But I'm second guessing my decision. I may return them and go for a lower-output set like the Riff Raffs or Black Dogs. I may also try a Lindy Fralin PAF.

Just my humble opinion, you may wanna do exactly that - I've gone the route of higher BKP pups with my Diezels. Never sounds as good as the RRs, BDs, Mules, Emeralds, etc.

Hang in there - keep the peace - namaste...

Well my Holy Divers were in transit when I posted last. They came in today. I'll try out the bridge bucker and see how it goes. But I'm thinking I'll sell the Holy Divers and go for a Riff Raff or Black Dog set.

But I don't only play a Diezel. That's the thing. I have a few Marshall/Marshall-type amps as well. And they would do just fine with a higher output pickup. But I only have one guitar. :)

Let us know how the Holydiver does. It's supposed to be JB-like, right? AJ obviously sounds good playing a JB into a VH4, so I wouldn't think this is a bad match depending on what you want out of the Diezel.

Honestly, Jones' sound comes mostly from his Marshall. You really only hear the high-gain sizzle and low-end from the Diezel in his sound. It's mostly Marshall. But I'll post back with my findings!

Eagerly awaiting...

Hope it works out

Just installed the Holy Divers. So far so good. They don't run as hot as the Duncan JB. The mids are a bit more growly, with less of that nasal snarl. Less harsh sounding, has some nice character. Low end is tighter than the JB and not as mushy. Overall I'm happy with them. The neck pickup is sweeeeeet for low-gain, clean tones. These are much tighter for high-gain and go well for the type of music I play. I still need to play with 'em more at higher volumes and adjust the pickup height. But I like 'em.

I also have a set of Black Dogs on their way, though.

Thanks for the review, and nice guitar! I have a Holydiver on the way for one of my seven strings; glad to hear that it's working OK with your VH4. The BKP guys thought they would play nice together.

Nice to read FourT6, glad you're digging them.

As for the BlackBogs you've got comin',  watch out with those - they're one of those things that make you go WHOA!!! when you plug 'em in and play. Mid rich with bite and growl like none other. I love mine - seriously, the most distinct sounding pups I've got out of the BKP bunch.

Your review of the Divers is nice - good to know they're gelling nicely with the amps.

Avagoodone,
Mojo
