just replaced a motor city afwayu with a bk cold sweat in my '73 custom

Did the same. Except the one going out was a 2nd degree. Love the Cold sweat in my LP.

also had a nailbomb set there before the afwayu bridge/2nd degree black belt neck set, but I needed more mids
I'm liking the cold sweat set better in this guitar
it was installed in some early 90's japanese hurricane les paul before, but the gibson is a lot darker, so it really needed something brighter

although the cold sweat bridge is ceramic and does sound VERY ceramic (raw and crunchy), it's not harsh or spikey at all
it cleans up pretty well, and its treble sparkle is quite pleasing
it's like the nailbomb without the upper mid scoop and a brighter top
a bit less thick sounding than the nailbomb, but still very thick in a les paul

if you want something darker and more rounded, maybe you want a holy diver instead of a rebel yell
one of my favorite models

I think Tim would actually recommend you a Crawler

Eric you seem to be one of the BKP experts in Rig Talk, and to all others I ask the same

Which BKP do you think will complement the following pickups the best

EMG 81
Suhr Aldrich
BKP Mules
Tonezone

I have a Goldtop les Paul with SD Alnico, and looking for replacing it for something different. I am looking for a pickup similar to a mule with that type of cruch that I love, PAF like but with a slighter higher output. I was offered a set of Rebel Yells and Emeralds...
I will have to buy others brand new.

Im looking for a pup that retains the PAF vibe and that doesn't have a huge output like the other pups I have, kind of like a PAF on Steroids....

I found out that I get a better tone out of lower output pickups through high gain amps...

I'd say Riff Raffs for the standard (lower) output (amazing by the way, I own a set) or the Emeralds for slightly hotter.

My 2 cents... I love my BKP's and I've got more on order (currently own RR's, PK's).

Peace,
V.

I'd throw VHIIs in there to compliment. Much less compressed and gainy than the 81s or Aldrich. Definitely more open and organic. I haven't played the other 2.

I don't have much experience with low output BKPs, but sounds like you want a Black Dog or VHII
I was between those two, but after I described what I wanted, Tim recommended me a custom Riff Raff, about 3-5% overwound (it's usually between 7.8k and 8.2k, mine is 8.47k) and with a custom 4 mm thick alnico 5 magnet (I think the usual is 3mm)
it's a very balanced and thick sounding pickup
it feels almost as high output as a nailbomb (loud and punchy), but without all the compression
I can play literally anything with that pup
from funk to extreme metal
sad thing is that Tim will hardly make another one like that, since he usually doesn't take custom orders over his regular models, unless it's his own suggestion
but if he suggests something else, go for it
he knows his pickups and he's a killer player
and also a big les paul fanboy
9/10 of his humbuckers are designed primarily for les pauls

I've tried and loved both the pain killer and warpig. Seriously the best pickups out there in my, not so vast knowledge, of pickups.

Nice, you have a little piece of history right there...

I finally went with the Rebel Yells, I bought them off from SDhupelia from the forum... I just paypaled, they ought to be shipping tomorrow...

Can't wait to get them going in the Goldtop! :D
