Just got a ESP VB 300, it comes with some emg hi z pickups. What's the best pickup for hard rock? Active or passive? Why? I have a set of WCR Iron Man's, think they'd be good?

Bareknuckle Miracle Man its a similar voicing to the coldsweat but not as bright more low mids more lows and more output.

I guess it depends a lot on the tuning & string gauge you use for it.

The guys at Truetone said a lot of Baritone's are tuned B to B. I got 2 different gauge strings to try, 13 - 62, 14 - 66.

What I don't really understand is the concept. Do you want a pup with more low end voicing? More output? Normal output? And why?

??

Thanks

You don't want more low end with thick gauges. Strings over 60 thump so much lows already. Also thicker strings sound louder, so you don't need as much output as you would with thinner strings. The dilemma here is that you don't want your pickups too bright, especially in the high mid area, because unwound stings like 13, 14 & such may sound awfully harsh. If I were you I'd give a call to the company I wanted to order pickups from & have a chat with them; you already have experience with their pickups so it should be easy to find out which one should suit your needs better.

This is a miracle man fer shure  if not email tim and tell him what you want out of a pickup and he will set you up.

PRS Tremonti Treble or DiMarzio Drop Sonic. Both have a nice top end, and don't have a huge low end. Very tight, and sound great in lower tunings

I like going active with Baritone guitars. I use an EMG 81 in the bridge wired up for 18 volts. My buddy has the same guitar you just picked up. He has an 81 in the bridge and an 81 in the neck wired up for 9 volts. I played a bunch of shows with them last Fall before they found another full-time guitarist.

Anyway, they're kind of a like a Christian Nu-Metal/Rock band. There are 3 songs on their MySpace page that were done with his Baritone and they're in B. He's using a Peavey 5150II for the dirty stuff run through a Chandler TG2 into an Apogee AD16 converter into Logic Studio.

The songs are "Cast Your Stone", "Mystery" and "Calling Out Again". The other songs were a Gibson SG Standard w/ stock pickups tuned down to C going into the same setup.
