Just chillin watching vh1 and this comes on. I counted 22 pinch harmonics, not including solo sections. Just thought you should all be aware if you aren't, that might be a bit much. :(

lol... can't argue with that, you are probably being generous and he missed 5 more

I liked Zakk back in the day, but by the end of his tenure with Ozzy, I couldn't even listen to him anymore. The renditions of Bark at the Moon and Crazy Train that they show on VH1 Classic all the time are absolutely vomit inducing, especially the pinch harmonics in the opening riff to CT.

I remember back when no rest for the wicked came out being really disappointed because I liked jake so much. But listening to it now, it has his best playing with ozzy. He slows down every now and then and the pinch harmonics are less frequent. The best thing Zakk ever put out was pride and glory. That was a cool disk.

You only counted 22? He must be slowing down in his old age.

I agree 100% pride&glory was great I have always like zakk back in the day but I can't stand him now!

agreed, this is when i first really saw him and thought he was a killer player

DEFINATELY

I think Zakk has struggled with an identity crisis for some time now...pretty boy with Ozzy, southern rocker with Pride & Glory, and now biker/viking with BLS...eh? But, I do dig his playing (as over used as his pinch harmonics may get). He is way more versatile than he lets off in the studio...he is capable of so much more than pentatonic scales and pinch harmonics. One thing that bothers me about Zakk though...he uses the same riffs time and time again...He needs to step out of his confort zone, and when he does I believe he will have something amazing to offer...

That right there shows exactly why the older stuff holds up. New recordings are so perfect and sound so good that it is almost sterile. In the Bark at the Moon recording, you can hear Jake's fngers hitting the strings, there is noise, etc. Those "imperfections" in the recording and use of analog equipment is why that stuff still sounds great on the radio all these years later.

Because it is all REAL! Nobody is perfect...I wanna hear the imperfections/mess ups during a recorded performance...that's the human element. With all of the massive production and engineering tricks/techniques, today's bands sound robotic and lifeless.

young guy that agrees! mostly, though i do like big production(depends on the song), and am a perfectionist, i personally think that you can have perfection(figuratively) and character at the same time. when i say character, i wouldnt call them imperfections but intricacies. like a certain string noise or something that makes something "pop". you dont hear those kinds of sounds on nickelback type guitar tracks. i also like analog on pretty much everything but bass and kick. keep in mind this is me comparing recordings, ive never actually compared it in real life. i would love to someday.

It would be nice to hear Zakk break out of his comfort zone. I'm sure he's fully capable of playing notes outside of the pentatonic scale, but he's been doing it for so long and been worshiped for it, I just don't think he's gonna change.

I love Zakk. Love his playing and his influences and the pimch harmonics don't bother me. I think he needs an outside producer to push him in a different direction soundwise and guitar wise. But he is old now and most older artists get set in their ways I think....

Absolutely agree. The dude is an amazing player that has been on autopilot for years. Th elast time I saw him was about 5 years ago and I walked out of the show about 35min into the set because I had heard the same solo for the 5th time. I know that he has SO MUCH more to offer but hes so entrenched in this Berserker/Biker thing that hes lost his way so to speak. All I can hope for is that he somehow regains some perspective and falls in love with the instrument again. IMHO, Hes playing a role instead of the guitar...

Agreed, I can only hope that he steps outside of himself long enough to take a good hard look at what hes been doing and what he could be doing. Im not asking the guy to change who he is, Im just looking for him to recapture the Passion and fire that he had a long time ago. Probably easier said than done but Ive seen it happen , EVH on the last tour and Album is a pretty good example..

Zakks version of Bark At The Moon is by far and away my favorite.
