regarding moving to where the "action" is music wise (which I agree 100%) which place would you choose

-L.A.
-N.Y.C.
-Nashville

and why?

maybe based on the type of music? opportunities?

You should consider adding Nashville to the list

Thinking the same thing, the new shred and chops monsters are all involved with new country.

Is Austin still the hot spot that it used to be?
Nashville has buttloads of talent but not a whole lot that I care to listen to...hard to beat NYC for diversity IMO although I've spent much more time there than in LA so I could be off on that.

So, where's the next Seattle?

Before the internet came along i could see how people moved to areas with a music scene. But now, do you really have to move anywhere to get someone to hear your music or to get recruited?

I dont know a lot about ny, but if you wanna be a session guy LA is a good place. So many studios and artists recording there are lots of opportunities for that. If you are trying to be an artist starting from the ground up, la can be tough. Unless you got friends here expect to be paying bass players and drummers for gigs and rehearsals if u want young guys that are good and look the part. When I was deciding between la and ny I picked la cause it seemed more of the industry was here. At this point the industry seems a mess and it may not even matter. That being said, la is an awesome place to live!

how about getting local gigs? which one would seem like a better place? to GIG....play in clubs and get the ball rolling, get people to listen to your music live....

with the internet you don't have to live in LA or NY to get your stuff out there but to GIG and get the right people to see you I still think you can benefit from moving to one of these places.

as a solo artist willing to put enough miles as a solo acoustic act which place is better? NY or LA?

To answer Rupe's Austin question....I think Austin is primarily the "indie rock" capital. I wasn't that impressed and felt it was a bunch of artsy self important types there when I visited.
They have a ton of venues on 6th street...more than anywhere but that doesn't mean the music is good. I think the phrase Keep Austin Weird still applies....it's weird for sure. Not for me...
Nashville and LA seem to be the two centers of the musical universe from my visits to both.

Nashville seems cool but people expect you to pay them just to jam...
My buddy spent some time there and was amazed when some wannabe "session guitarists" wouldn't jam with him unless he hired them! Whats that about?? Dude's a MONSTER guitarist. If anything, they should pay him.

Not sure if that's the norm there, but that's quite lame IMO. Seems a good place for aspiring studio musicians who have the skills to be in demand, or for a band who already has their shit together. I wouldn't go there looking to jam with other musicians though or to form a new group.

I am a fan of L.A. myself. But I am not sure I could swing the overhead $$$ to live there. It would suck to be there and end up working at Arby's just to pay the rent

The NYC music scene is painful. Hope the others are in better shape.

I have spent lots of time in Nashville, NYC and LA. In my experience LA/Southern California is the place to be for all things entertainment related. Its all happening there 24/7 and everybody is from somewhere else, if you can do it, you can do it in LA. My favorite.

I lived in Nashville for about 8 years and played in a band with my brother for about 5 years. Cool town to live in but for a musician it depends on what you want to do. IMHO and I what learned from being friends with quite few other players in that town is it better suits players who are looking to be hired guns for touring country singers and or song writers more so than putting a band together and playing the clubs trying to get noticed. My first guitar teacher Andy Gurley is a hired gun for several bands. He stays very busy and on the road. That said the guy has serious serious chops and play almost any style. You have to be really good to stand out there as player.

I'm not saying the band thing can't happen since you have Kings of Leon from there and SELF (Matt Mahaffey) who had a pretty good success in the 90's then moved to LA but ended up writing for TV and movies. It just seems that a lot players there play in several bands or are in and out of bands so much that there isn't really a forming of a "following" for a particular band when you form a band and play the clubs constantly.

Agreed.

Everyone raves about it, expecially the Brooklyn scene. But all I ever see are indie-hipster crap bands.

Rock (or what most people on this forum consider rock) doesn't seem to exist in NYC right now.
