I am a fan of L.A. myself. But I am not sure I could swing the overhead $$$ to live there. It would suck to be there and end up working at Arby's just to pay the rent

You're not going to cover the rent by working at Arby's unless you live with 9 other people who work at Arby's. :D

The NYC music scene is painful. Hope the others are in better shape.

Agreed.

Everyone raves about it, expecially the Brooklyn scene. But all I ever see are indie-hipster crap bands.

Rock (or what most people on this forum consider rock) doesn't seem to exist in NYC right now.

how's the acoustic pop scene?

In all seriousness, there is quite a big Singer Songwriter acoustic scene in Brooklyn.

Or rent a couch in someone living room off of craigslist :D. In all seriousness if I had to do that I would. Especially if I was just checking out the scene.

I lived there 20 odd years ago... and it was kinda like that... well 4 or 5 of us not 9

but now that I am a grownup and old and cranky I can't do the couch thing, nowadays I prefer to stay at the Sunset Marquis.

Love Nashville, anyone going to the amp show??,,One thing I always notice is that the talent is un-fuckin believable there, you can go into a alley and find a guy that plays as good as Brad Paisley(He is a great guitarist for you metal heads   ) So I would think the competition is pretty rough there, great place to hang though.

I think one needs to go where one could gather and maintain the biggest following possible.

+1 on that. one of my favorties.

Nashville gets my vote. LA is pretty much dead if you're a band, but as an individual you might find work...

I grew up in Nashville. It's an industry icon and not just C&W anymore. And, it is one of the few states without a state income tax. 4 distinct seasons and accessible.

If it was 1983 I would say you definitely want to be in LA.

don't tell that to Metallica....they moved to San Francisco because L.A. was too gay!

haha

LA is king for Business, and Liveable

NYC is the most fun but harder for a band __ If you are doing a solo act it could be really good too

I wouldn't consider any other USA cities personally

If you are looking at it as you said:

"""""""""regarding moving to where the "action" is music wise (which I agree 100%)"""""""""""

I'd probably move to Nashville or maybe a nicer part of Hollywood. If I was relocating out of Canada, it would be because I found work as a session musician/film scorer/arranger, not because I had a band that was trying to "make it."

Moving to enjoy music? I love nashville, very diverse, and a damn nice place.
But i wouldnt move to a hotbed music town to try to make it. Its hard to stick out when the guy serving your coffee, bussing your table and sitting across from you are all there to do what you want to.

If you're a singer/songwriter DIY sorta guy you don't really need to move. Especially if you're ugly. Just find a publisher and get to work.

If you haven't already registered with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC you should do so now and save yourself a headache. EMI just dropped ASCAP so you may want to go with either of the others.

I can't recommend a move to try to do songwriting as a primary source of income right now. If you're moving to find a group of musicians and form a band then by all means yes. Any of those locations would be good but I would personally recommend a move to whatever type of climate you'd prefer. I just moved to the SF Bay area and love it up here.

I agree that moving to a hotbed will be significantly more difficult and again strongly recommend against it. You don't need a label anymore. If you have decent organizational skills and talent you can do it yourself.

Yes, because there is nothing "straighter" than playing gigs to entire audiences filled with denim vest over leather motorcycle jacket clad, greasy haired dudes. :D And those "gay" bands had more chicks than they knew what to do with.

In 1985, we moved here from Chicago, where things were much more "metal". The first night on the strip we met CC and Bret from Poison when they were still a club band. They were all decked out and we just looked at each other like, "man is this GLAMMY or what?" They gave us a flyer and talked to us about their show the next night at the Troubador. CC was holding his hot rod flame, strat head Charvel in the flyer picture and we talked Charvels for a couple of minutes. So we went to see them the next night and I had never seen a gig with a demographic like that in my entire life. It was almost entirely female and they were all dressed for what looked like a porno convention. It always cracked me up that the more metal guys were always saying bands like that were "gay" and used to get pissed at all the chicks they pulled.

PS. Poison was absolutely terrible by the way. They sounded like they had just met the day before. But it was a fun gig for reasons entirely other than musical.

you got a point there hehehhe chicks like the feminine looking doods...... which confirms the theory that most chicks are bisexual :inlove:
