I am strictly a guitar player...what's a cheap and good bass guitar.

I just got one of those Haden basses from Rondo Music... I mean, for $149... It's not the worst purchase I have ever made. Needs a fret job and the hardware and electronics are pretty cheap for sure... But it does the job.

Used Spector. Or a cheap fender squire with upgraded pickups.

I just got this. $160 from guitar center as they took $30 because of a hassle I had to go through that I won't get into.

Sounds pretty good.

Here's a recording of it through SHB-1 Bass amp plugin. Sounds pretty cool I think, but I'm not a bass player and my guitars are tuned one octave lower than E so it's muddy unless I turn up the mids on the bass. The tuners feel like they are made out of cardboard and I'm going to replace them. The bridge? The allen set screws are too big, I had to hack some allen screws in there so my hand doesn't get dug up. I play with a pick, palm on the bridge, which I'm also going to replace as the action is set proper, but I have no adjustment now because the screws were cut at a set length. I don't know if I'll replace the pickups. They seem to sound good to me, but as I mentioned, I'm not a bass player.

also in the market... so far squire seems to be safe bet. I know nothing about bass pups though. What is a good clear pup for rock? i picked up a tech 21 bass driver for use as DI and coloration.

I went with a used Ibanez Soundgear from GC used for about $200. It has active electronics that seem to help if going direct.

Squier vintage modified J or P bass (used)
MIM Fender J or P bass (used)
Ibanez GSR stuff (example a GSR200)

Used Mexican Fender Jazz Bass.

This is what I have.
Got a great setup on it and new strings and it plays and sounds killer. As good as anything.
