What do they do really?
Tame the high end and stop the sound from beating you in the face lol!! More like sound dispersal.

For a super cheap option you can use duct tape on the grill cloth over the dust cap portion of the speaker.

Beam blockers seem like a great idea if you are going to be playing too close to your amp and you can't tilt cab or aim it more toward your ears.

yes it does, thanks bro! I have heard of the duct tape method too, but for cosemtic purposes, I'd rather do it internal to cab. I just bought them, so let u guys know how they work out.

Didn't the THD 4 x 12 come standard with something like those? Maybe Ed will chime in. I haven't tried them, but they sound like a good idea - I'll be interested to see how they record for you.

You can make those cheaply with the same material. Do a google search for speaker dust caps. You can find 4, 5 or 6 inch dust caps easily. Then you just have to use a simple flat piece of thin plastic to mount it on and attach in front of the speaker. Should only cost you a few dollars. The cool thing is that you can try different size dust caps to determine what works best for you.

I made some last weekend. 12' hacksaw blades are perfect supports since they have pre-drilled holes at the right spots to mount on the speaker. Plus they are very thin and metal. For the middle, I used 4 1/4 inch sanding disks covered in black duct tape to hold the to the hacksaw blade. I didn't take any pics, but they work well and my cab sounds great.

Total cost was $11.33 plus tax. $2.18 for 4 hacksaw blades. 5.16 for 4 sanding disks and $3.99 for a roll of black duct tape. Much better than $72 for 4 beam blockers.

Thanks for this.

I've been getting frustrated lately with my sound (probably more room acoustics than anything), because when I stand a few feet away I am not liking the sound, yet it sounds incredible just a few inches away.
I have been wondering about making my own 'beam blockers' but wasn't completely sure how to go about it.

Ingenuity at its finest. Great idea.......

I have them and they work great. The only thing that sucks is it limits my micing positions.

The way I solved this is I put them on the top two speakers of my angled mesa 412. the bottom speakers can still be micd freely.

I think SRV did the duct tape thing. I've used them and they are cool. really depends on the speaker they are used with as well. V30 yes, EVM12L no.

I made a bunch with speaker dust caps (available at any mid/high end audio store) and some black heavy contraction paper for the support. They have lasted 6 years now and they affect sound exactly like my Weber ones. Plus they cost less than $1/pc.

I use them in my combo and the top two speakers in my angled cabs.

How come not the EV?

There aren't any harsh spikes with EVs. There really is no need for them. It muddles the sound more than disperses it.
