This kind of discourages me.

Jay knows his shit for sure. And what he suggest may just work better. That doesn't mean you wouldn't like the result with the Beam Blockers. Again, duct tape worked for SRV. It doesn't always have to be acoustically "correct" to sound good. Half the reason people like vintage gear is because of all the imperfections and how those color the sound. It can be quite pleasing sometimes. Take a very long cord that cuts highs over the length. Some people really prefer that filtering and miss it when you get some cord that eliminates the "problem" of filtering. Same with old '60s Marshall grill cloth. Some of that old stuff really filtered what came through. But a lot of guys like the result and spend big $ to buy that cloth.

really just personal taste sometimes and what your application will be or what the end rest is you are after.

Personally, I tried a cab w/ blockers and heard the "phase-y-ness" and did not like it.
What worked for me, as far as diminishing the high end "beaming", was really, really breaking in the speakers well.
I did try with the foam donut thing and that seemed to work but I did not play with it long enough. It was impractical for me because of the constant travel and popping off the grill for close mic-ing.
Your mileage may differ. Through physics the "why" can be explained, but in the end it's all subjective to what you, your FOH engineer, and what the audience is perceiving.

I just ordered two for the top speakers in my 4x12. I personally like my settings very high on treble and presence but it's a bit much for most people and straight ahead of the cabinet is indeed very beamy. For $36 it sounds like an interesting experiment to try in hopes of finding a happy middle ground.

I love my donut. Smooth sound all around the room. Gets that Bogner sexy upper mid thang happenin' fo five dolla.

(Ninja edit: that's on a broken in V30, fyi.)

Yeah, probably part of my problem with V30s is I've never really had a well broken in one.

Pound that puppy with house music, something with well compressed bass and kick, right up to the breakup point but not overdriving it and let it rip for 50 hours. It will blow your mind!

When I was running a Marshall 1960b cab with Celestion 75's in it I did the duct tape on the inside of the grill cloth and it worked wonders. Ever since I went to the G-flex cabs I don't have the laser beam thing anymore but it is a great idea depending on the cab.
