Beer-drinkers Boycott Motorworks Brewery out of Florida.

Apparantly one of our more well known local/regional expanding breweries has begun reneging on payment due to bands, and canceling checks once cut to bands because he's more focused on his recent expansion into the local airport even as one of his other local properties is struggling with foreclosure.

Don't buy their products, and for damn sure don't sign up to do a gig there.

Their shit is very popular here. It's rare to go into any store that sells beer, and not see multiple offerings of theirs on display. I bartend, and their beers fly off the shelf at the places which stock them.

Yes, they have locations in Sarasota, Bradenton, and Orlando, so definitely a Florida thing. I know we have some Florida members here.

As far as the bands some were Florida based, some were out of state based on tours. One band traveled 500 miles from their closest tour date to play the place.

There used to be (and maybe still are) people asking bands to play their Halloween/Christmas parties for free with with "more gigs possibly in the future". So many retarded bar owners want to pay bands nothing, and want assurances that they will bring a crowd.

I feel really lucky that this isn't the norm where I live - I've heard tons of stories about it happening other places, but it's extremely rare here

Honestly stiffing a band on pay in my neighborhood is a good way to be violently assaulted and perhaps worse

It's pretty rare in the social media era IME. The last time I was stiffed at a gig was 20 years ago...in Florida, lol. One of the few benefits of social media....that kinda stuff travels like wildfire and next thing you know your venue can't get any decent band to play there. Would be a death blow move for any live music venue to try it around here.

Even back then, i've played hundreds maybe even a thousand gigs in the PNW and it's never happened once

A guy tried to pay us less once. Said beer sales were low. Giant, violent drummer got him to change his mind. Those were the good old days. I had a lot of fun in shitbox dive biker bars.

If you play enough gigs, it is bound to happen sooner or later. I have had some difficult conversations and occassionally compromised with bar owners. Most of the time, it is their stupidity that creates the problems. Like not cancelling a gig if it looks like rain. Etc. Where I live, even if a bar stiffed a few bands, there would be no shortage of bands wanting to play there. Tons of bands here and tons of places hiring them.....
