Asking specifically in regards to the 5150 III 100-watt standard version of this amp

Besides the EVH cabs/speakers...

Anybody here have any good experience or favorites as far as other cabs and speakers go with this amp?

Thanks!

I use my 50w 5150III with both an EVH 4x12 and a Splawn 4x12 that has an X of V30s and H30s (I run both cabs at the same time) and it's a killer combo between both cabs. The V30 H30 combo alone is actually real good with the III IMO. I tend to find myself standing in front of that cab more than the EVH. It's tighter, more aggressive, a bit brighter (in a good way) and just makes the amp sound a bit meaner I guess you could say.

I didn't like the III with all V30s at all, tried that and it was horrible (yet the original 5150 worked well with all V30s). Adding the H30s brought in some needed tightening, brightening and calmed down the mid heaviness of the two V30s left. The V30 H30 X works well since the speakers voices sort of fill in the blanks of the other one making it a more even sound instead of too bright, too dark or too mid heavy etc. I'm no V30 hater either, they just don't work as well as other options with the III IMO.

Come to think of it I haven't found an amp yet that didn't work well with the V30 H30 X pattern.

Thoughts so V30's and classic lead 80's mixed together ? I read some where that apart from power rating they had some things in common but the classic lead 80 was smoother and better for hi gain stuff...

I love my 5150III with creambacks! Still nice open uncompressed mids but with the added tightness of a higher rated speaker, great pairing!

Also which Creambacks? 65 or 75

Im actually going back to a 2x12.. just suits our venues and my travel space better. Been researching and leaning towards a Two Rock Sig 2x12, Dr Z Zbest 2x12, Bogner OS 2x12... I'd like my Stone Age 2x12 back  Ive got scumbacks which sound great with every amp Ive tried or had(including my 5153)

Good luck with your search.

Splawn 412 with smallblocks

I have a Splawn 2x12 with sb25s and really like the 5153 thru it.

I played my 5153 through some of Jon Corabi's old road beat Soldano 4x12's with v30s and it was orgasmic. My drummer owns the cabs…..it should be criminal for a non-guitarist to have his hands on such great tone vehicles.

I had a Marshall VM purple B cab with the G12 C greenbacks and it sounded great. Darker than the G12 Ms and smoother.

I'm running a mesa traditional 4X12 cab with all V30s.. it sounds great!

I've used a mesa oversized 412, diezel 412, mesa trad 412, evh 212 and the evh 412 with mine and the evh sounds the best to my ears. Both the 212 (g12h30's) and the 412 are killer. I prefer the tone and dispersion of the 412 but an evh 412 loaded with h30's I think would be an awesome middle ground between an all v30 cab and an all greenback flavored vab. When I had the 212, I ran it together with my evh412 and it was glorious. I have 2 evh 412s now though and the dispersion and huge sound can't be denied.

When I had mine......I preferred Heritage G12H 75hz and Lynchbacks in that order. I also liked the RI Greenbacks over the EVH/Heritage Greenbacks. Did NOT like Vintage 30's, Anniversary H30's, or Scumback BM75's. All our ears are different though.

Hmmm...

I decided to go with G12H 55hz heritage and Vintage 30's mixed...

I was going to go wit the RI Greenbacks before I decided to go with the Heritage 55's... I'm just pulling the GT75's out of my Uber kab put dropping two speakers of some sort.

Played a Friedman 4x12 yesterday with Greenbacks and V30's and it was sweet... very smooth. It helped me make my choice towards greenbacks of some sort to mix with the V30's

Anniversary H30's keep sounding to harsh to my ears and they are no-go for sure for me.

I did the V30/CL80 mix in my Whitebox 212 Modern cab for awhile and am thinking about going back to it, TBH. Right now I'm just running 2 Mesa V30s and it can be fizzy at lower volumes - it opens up nicely at gig volumes. IIRC, the mix of the V30/CL80 seemed fuller to my ears and tamed the fizzy highs nicely - and also sat nicely in a band mix (only one guitar, though). I switched over to all V30s just to see what that would sound like, but I think I'll probably head back to trying the V30/CL80 mix.

I've never played thru the V30/H30 mix, so I cannot compare - but the V30/CL80 mix sounds pretty damned good to my ears!
