Best amp for this guitar sound?

Sounds like you need a peavey 6505/5150 series. They have plenty of gain and mids to cut through anything. You can find used ones here on the classifieds between 600 to 800 bucks. Some of them are even modded by FJA and Voodoo. I'd definitely start there. What kind of amp did he used to have? What kind of cab is he using? Oh I just now saw you have youtube clips, I didn't get a chance to watch them.

He's currently using a JCM800 2203. Cab is a Marshall 1960A. I know they're meant to be killer amps but he just can't seem to get this sound with it - even with a Tubescreamer. He's tried fiddling with the Eqs obviously, but it just doesn't seem to get the sound.
 
after listening to the first two youtube clips i'm thinking some ridiculous boss hm-2 action =0 maybe a metal zone can work too, very cheap







otherwise a peavey amp would be a good option

Are you gonna try out as lead guitarist for Deströyer? ;) They have used Mesa's for a while. Since Cold Steal is recorded by that stupid norwegian asshat, it's really hard to hear... Sounds like a 5150.

Nocturnal graves sounds like some pedal action. Best sound IMO.

Ketzer probably used that custom build amp that one guitarist have....
 
Haha, nah just an Australian actually. Although I do have a vest! I'm actually just a drummer so I won't be trying out for Destroyer. Trying to find out how to get the sound for our guitarist.

The 5150 would be a good option I think. Seen it recommended quite a bit now. There's a guy selling one nearby where my guitarist lives so hopefully he can go try it out.

What sort of pedal do you think for that Nocturnal Graves type sound? HM2 like Uni81 suggested?
 
Yeah.. 5150 is the way to go in your case. A bit standard tho IMO.

Nocturnal is probably a marshall with some pedal in front.. cant tell which one. It's a good solution aswell.

Wonder what Kriss Hades uses... Practise amp mic'd into a PA haha.

Yeah, I'll get him to try out a 5150 and see what he thinks. That Boss HM2 pedal might be an option too...

Edit: After some forum sleuthing I just found out you play in Procession! Small world indeed. I was gonna see you play here!

Cheap solution, run a Boss MT-2 set as a boost in front of the 2203.

An HM-2 would be a good choice for the types of tones referenced in the original post feeding a Marshall imo. This thread reminded me of my younger days so I dug out my old MT-2 and recorded this quick. Just standard tuning and wank riffing just to give you an idea of the tone.

This setup is very similar to your guitarist's, a JMP 2203 (almost the same as an early JCM 800 2203) set for rock crunch (gain on 7) with a Tube Screamer (I'm using a Maxon OD-9 variant) into the MT-2.

Both pedals were set as clean boosts in series. I would have loved to have this setup in my younger days, but I didn't know any better back then and didn't have access to the information like we do now. :lol: :LOL:
