So I've always done song writing by just remembering in my head, but occassionally when I try to replay a song the next day, I don't play it exactly. I've had this Guitar Tracks Pro 4 recording software for a few years with a cheap M-Audio interface that can record well enough to do demos. The thing is, the Guitar Rig amp software that came free with it is sucky. When I'm playing fast, the notes are actually delayed a little bit, and it's ridiculous to set up a half stack and put a mic in front of it just for demo/writing/etc. What is a good device that will let me record direct that have a few different amp sounds and effects that is on the cheap? It doesn't have to sound like a million bux, but I'd like it to sound better than playing directly from a distortion pedal chained up with other stomp box effects.

Maybe I should be looking at something like the Randall RD5H instead?????? Heck I dunno......

Pod HD Bean and a computer. Connect via USB and voila.

BTW, I listened to "Broken Man" just now. While I'm pretty much a metal head, I must say that your song is pretty good. It's catchy, simple, and well structured. It's the kind of song that makes you want to sing along with it. All in all, I would say it's a very solid power pop/hard rock tune. It's so hard to write upbeat, somewhat happy sounding songs without making them sound cheesy, but I think you did well on that song.

The snowball mic is a pretty simple recording option. Sets up like a regular mic, runs direct to the computer.

If you have an iPhone/iPad snag JamUp from the App Store and grab the metal and sig packs. The built in recorder is great for scratch tracks. $30. 1/8" cable direct into your DAW.

Nothing is more convenient than recording ideas with your phone. It's always in your pocket and ready to record.
Backup your files on your computer.

I guess this depends on your definition of cheap, but people are dumping the Eleven Rack these days in the $300 range, and as far as modelers go it's a killer unit.

I just plug into an iRig Pro and my iPad, and run into JamUp Pro. Voila.

I use my AMT pedals direct and they sound great. Can be had pretty reasonably priced (under $100 online used).

X3 beans can be found cheap, and believe it or not, sound pretty decent.

An old clip of mine:
