I have played for around 8 years, but feel extremely limited for the amount of time I've been playing. I'd like to learn better theory. I've took lessons before, but never reallt stuck with them. I want to know why this scale fits over this chord progression, and just generally know more chords and their voicings/applications, etc. Bands I really respect and dig: Opeth, Evergrey, even stuff like Plankton, Hendrix,...I really like lots of different styles. I really just want to become a better player, and to be able to WRITE!! Is this book any good??:

Any advice, words of wisdom are appreciated!!

Hi. The Frank Gambale Technique Book 1 & 2 covers different scales and chords very well. Also you could check almost any Jazz Piano books out there, but imo those Gambale books are best I've seen yet for guitar.

Edit - I forgot Nicholas Slonimsky: Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns. Many, many, many years ago I read Steve Vai mentioned this book being his treasure. You can look the link below what it contains...I have this book too and all I can say most of its scales or patterns are not any "chord" related in common way or western traditional harmony. It rather divides octave(s) in symmetrical sections and presents every and each permutation which you can make of it. Lots of usable ideas and riffs lurking there almost on every page though.

For chord theory I can't think of a better book than Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry.
