So I've heard great things about the invader, Savage, Fireball and Blackmore, but not much love for the Powerball and haven't heard much about the SE.

I disagree. Have a/b'd the both of em on the same cab. Invader is smoother and more bottom end. And of course they were cranked.glpg80":3ngynrr6 said:the invader seems to try to do what a 5150 can do better. i can agree with the people who like the invader tone, but a cranked 5150 sounds much better - it covers that tone nicely.
Seems like the Blackmore is the most popular from what I've seen. Personally, I really dig the EL34 SE a lot. Really nice mid growl, thick tight lowend, and tons of saturation and gain. It was a bit too bright for my tastes at first, but an RFT in V1 seemed to be the ticket for me. I also liked the Blackmore a lot, but prefer the SE for the all out aggressive metal tones. REALLY want to get my hands on a Savage or Invader some time, or the Savage SE.shred-o-holic":1d40p9w7 said:The most popular ENGL seems to be the SE which is the only one I haven't tried besides the new Fireball 100. Out of the ENGL's I've tried I like the Invader the best with the Savage coming in second......

I owned couple engl se, 3 powerballs, savage 120, invader 100 and 150, and the Steve morse. The powerball and engl se used to be my fav but I don't like the tone of the power all anymore and I'm not really into the se anymore either, I bought a Blackmore and because I got it for a great price and I figured I would try it fr a month, now that I've owned it for a while I can say I really love the tone and it's the best engl for me.
It's a really nice sounding amp and I'm glad I bought it and if I didn't own those other engls i wouldn't really be able to appreciate it, the savage 120 is another amp I really liked.

Fuckin channel 4 is just plain brutal with my setup. It also cutz thru nicely. Midi capabilty kicks ass too. Very good clean channel and overall the amp is very versitile. It's a keeper for me.![]()

That's my opinion, too. The leads sounded and felt mushy when I played them. It's not that there was too much bass - in fact it can be a really bright amp - it's more the fact that I felt wedged in this one sound, this one liquid sound that had no real punch or sensitivity.Tawlks":219mo9hc said:Well, sorry I phrased that badly.
When I say best I mean favourite, in your opinion what is the bet ENGL amp?
Having only experience with a Powerball I can't compare models, it sounded really compressed to me, too much so for classic/hard rock, lead tones were liquid, overall I liked it but if spending that much money I'd look elsewhere.
But from what I've heard, and what style and tone I like, the Savage would be my favourite... ?I currently play a 5150 II and long for nicer cleans, wouldn't mind it being slightly smoother and tighter.
