Here is what I am looking for:

dual cutaway
dual humbucker - passives preferred
fixed bridge
volume and tone knobs
will be tuned a whole step down

No esp or schecters. Suggestions???

Used Gibson Explorer. It'll sound way heavier that super-strats and improve in value.

You said no Schecter, but check out a Schecter Banshee! This isn't the Schecter you grew up with!

Charvel San Dimas would be great also, just add a tone knob.

Jackson Hardtails.

I hated Schecters, until I played the KM7
But I guess a cheap SG would work

No ESP? ESP rules for this.

I have been playing metal guitar for 28yrs and have never been able to get along with an ESP .... don't know why but something about them just doesn't do it for me

You can probably find a used Carvin for under 1000. Excellent build quality and their pickups are not half bad either ... Dunno if it qualifies as a metal guitar, but I've seen people play metal nevertheless.

Ibanez Premium. They don't make the Premium line any more, but you can still find them new for good prices.

+1 for Carvin!
You could order a new one for under$1k if you don't go too crazy with the options.

Ibanez RGA121 was the first guitar that came to mind.

For what you asked for? A Gibson SG.

Otherwise, in that price range, get a Gibson Les Paul Studio and never NEED another fixed-bridge guitar again...
