Hey Team:

I'm a troglodyte and still mic my guitar cabs for live shows. Which mic do you guys like the best for this application?

Cheers!

I have been using my tube amps more lately for gigs and I just stick a Sennheiser e609 in front of the speaker. I have had nothing but great luck with it.

Sm57 probably. These wishbone amp hooks are pretty cool too

Sennheiser e906 on one speaker, and an SM57 on another.

Yeah, +1 on the Sennheiser e-series mics.
The design allows you to just hang the mic over the cab and still get great results if a proper stand is not available. Very cool feature.

The e906 is worth the extra $$ for the 3 position response switch. The silver e609 can be overly bright, but the e906 gives you that sound, plus 2 more sounds with the highs rolled back a bit. The darkest setting is very much like the legendary e409.

It doesn't hurt to have a SM57 along for the gig as well. It's a classic sound, and they're dirt cheap.
It can also be used to open beers, and makes a decent hammer if you're stuck....

Same here, welcome to the cave.

As stated here by the others, the staple SM57. If you want to try a close nephew, check out a Audix i5. To me it's similar but seems slightly less compressed and dampened than the SM57.

Troglodyte until the day I die.

These guys already covered it 57 or 609.

I have the 57/609 combo set up for recording puproses, and it sounds Killer!

Cool. Thanks, guys. Looks like any of the three will work. Most venues have the 57 and I have to move it away from the dust cap.

Gonna check out all three of these and also the Audix i5 what was recommended by a few others on another board.

Cheers!

I used to use an E906 on an Audix Cab grabber, quick and stays put...started using an Aiken Gold Box and prefer it's consistency, especially when using our own PA. Plug it in and done.

I prefer the 57 but the benefit of the 609 is that it's side-address, so you can get closer to the cab. More than once I've accidentally bumped a 57 on my cab, and I'm someone who knows about audio and tries to be considerate. Nowadays I just run the DI out from my Kemper so it's irrelevant.

Time to rock. . .

I like the idea of the Aiken Gold Box; much easier. I'm playing a Friedman JJ100, so I'm curious how it would translate.

57 first or 609 or i5- all close enough that mic placement will affect the sound more than anything.
Take a look at the AT AE2500. It's a killer kic drum mic that Metallica used to mic guitar cabs during thier Magnetic tour. It has a dynamic and a condenser perfectly phase aligned in one housing. But to be honest, if it is only for live, at that price point you may as well get out of the cave and go with a TNLive.
