My amp has developed a hiss/buzz that's driving me nuts, actually, I don't know if it is the amp. What ever the case, it HAS TO GO!! I am bordering on a nervous breakdown. What pedal/rack unit can eliminate the buzz/hiss without messing with the tone??
THANKS!!

Fortin Zuul hands down, the price is steep but it is worth it if you have the cash to spare

Decimator. Less than 100 bucks used, and does the trick. I'm sure the Fortin is killer but I notice no tone suck when I switch my pedal on/off. By contrast the Boss NS pedal sucks some high end.

this is what I was considering. thanks man!

I owned a pro-rack G and if I had to do it again, I'd just run the decimator pedal and be done.

I have never felt the need and have been satisfied with the noise level, or lack thereof, with all the amps I've played through.

I assume you play with a ton of gain, so you don't feel a noise gate is necessary? You must not use as much gain as most everyone else here..lol. I don't play metal but if I don't use a noise gate I definitely have to dance with my volume knob lol.

Depends on what I'm doing, but typically I play with less gain for the thrash stuff and a bit more for my death riffage. But in general I'd guess its still less gain than most. I'd say my gain knob on any given amp is typically set between noon and 2 o'clock. I've goofed around and have certainly cranked the gain to 3 o'clock with all my amps and still didn't feel I'd need a gate if I was to play with that high of a gain level.

Why not try to identify and actually remove the noise? Looking for a noise gate first seems like the wrong way to go about it. But maybe you have tried all the normal trouble-shooting stuff already?

which normal trouble shooting issues are you referring to?

If your amp has “developed a hiss” I wouldn’t try to hide it. Find out what’s causing it. Is it all the time? Have changed anything in the signal chain? Moved it to a different location? Checked your tubes? An amp shouldn’t just start hissing.

With the amp itself it´s old tubes and dirty connections that are the most common stuff, so cleaning all the connectors and rolling a good preamp tube thru the positions probably are the first things to check out. But before you get into that you need to eliminate all the variables before the amp... does it go away when you roll down the volume of the guitar, or use a different cable, or turn off the TV/lights, etc, to pinpoint that the trouble is in the amp.

EXACTLY! There are surely hi-end and lo-end amps that have higher idle noise, but they're not supposed to "Develop" hisses, unless you have a noisy tube, or a cap/resister issue typically , new pedal in the chain that hisses with some amps and not others (Yes I've verified that numerous times, typically with various 'chorus' pedals (hi-end) . . or power-related . Good luck

Well, is it the typical noise associated with an amp the a good amount of gain on it? Because that's completely normal and why noise gates are necessary for a high gain amp. Unless it's been modded all my amps benefit from a noise gate. Total silence in between songs, or dead stop chugging..

I'm fine with the Boss or MXR...the tone change was not that big a deal for me. Never tried the Fortin. But all the rest of them changed the tone some.
