Update: Sound great, one went microphonic already.
Hey guys, I fell into the deep and dangerous world of tube rolling. Hours of strumming the same progressions while swapping a tube here or there....couldn't be happier!
I installed a set of 6v6gt Tung Sol USA tubes last night. I do like the sound of them a lot but am not certain they quite jive with my tone search. From what I can tell, these are some of the best tubes for guitar amps.
My question is, what is your favorite set of 6v6s? Mind you, I love a huge 3D clean and then get screamingly heavy on the gain channel.
May be that I biased these a touch hotter, as I now have a bit more background noise, which wasn't expected.
So, after reading some online, I think KenRads would be a great option but am new to the NOS tube game and pretty much spent my play money on my range of new 12ax7s: 5 mullards, 2 RCA long grey's and 1 RCA black plate.
I happened to have picked up this set of Tung Sols forever ago but have a feeling the Ken Rads are calling my name? Any experience would be helpful!
EDIT: The Tung Sols had a tube that was gunked up. I somehow missed this in my excitement and assumed I had properly cleaned them when I first received them ages ago. After a thorough cleaning, they are performing wonderfully.
How I would describe the Tun Sols after brief use (Less than 1 hour
Pre-amps: NOS Mullard 12ax7s
Low- Deep, extended, thumpy, tight. Beautifully present but never overwhelming. I could see this being the perfect low end balance for many/most guitarists.
Mids: These seems to leave the mids you are pushing alone, but makes each part of the spectrum more present. If you had a lot of mids before, you will notice it more now. Smooths out things at the same time though, could just be comparing the previous Chinese output tubes.
Highs- The highs are extended like the lows and just as controlled. I don't seem to be getting ear fatigue and highs are able to be dialed in enough and are present enough for a mix.
Final Analysis:
Highly recommend. A relatively cheap upgrade you can do for your help to help make it shine. These tubes have a smooth breakup and tone to them overall while providing clarity and punch. Will i still pick up a pair of the JAN RCAs to try? Sure, why not? I can get a killer NOS/tNOS matched pair for $60, so its worth a try in a blackface style amp.
I will review these tubes again with RCAs running in preamp section since it has been recommended countless times all over the internet for American amps. I appreciate your input and am glad my initial assessment was skewed.
