Looking for an old school metal sound ala MoP/early thrash tones/early In Flames, etc.
Duncan Distortion or something else?

EMG 81 if you can go active. It is *the* sound you're looking for. Duncan Distortions are great but not as tight and purpose built for straight thrash metal as EMGs.

Kill Bon Jovi was used to record MoP. It didn't have EMGs...

I’d go with the vintage Dirty Fingers, Bill Lawrence’s, Mighty Mites or Schaller’s, especially to match a great vintage amp you have like a iic+. The recent stuff like the Duncan’s mentioned will just be comparatively bland and less inspiring to play

I really like the Gibson 500T, the Duncan Black Winter, and the Duncan Distortion.

All are kind of within the same league of pickups.

dirty fingers would be sweet, not sure where to find those

They can come up on reverb or eBay. I have a few extra's I may list later on also. The other pickups I mentioned imo are equally great in their own ways

Any hot-ish Duncan would sound great.
Distortion, sure. Invader? Not so much.
JB=totally depends on guitar. But for thrash, the Distortion would be tighter for sure than the JB.

If you can't make an Invader sound tight and have bite then you ain't doing it right.
Too much bass? Doesn't almost everyone use boost/od pedals now to "cure" their low-end "issues"?

Best passive would be a Duncan SH-5 in my opinion. If active get an 81.

Maybe it's not the first thought for most, but the invader was literally MoP.

Maybe (other sources claim 500T/496 in the King V and Explorer), but that Invader wasn't in a thick sounding Les Paul. ?
I have a Gibson V myself that I wouldn't put in Distortions as a 1st choice, because I would loose too much low end. So there's a Super Distortion bridge and a Breed Neck in it to beef it up. I wouldn't be surprised if Jaymz was trying to do that as well.

EDIT:
Found these pics.
Doesn't look like the oversized pole-pieces from the Invader.
