I have been using this real thick 3ft speaker cable made for Mars music years ago before they went out of business... I need to replace it finally, however I want one that sounds just like it.... it seems to preserve my highs a little better than some others ive tried. What is considered to be the best speaker cable out there these days? lamp cord? what ya got?

I just use a "vtg audio" 14 guage speaker cable. Its made in the usa and you can screw the end covers off to resolder them if they come off. I don't really buy into all the cable hype though. Copper's copper lol. As long as it's got good connectors/jacks

Look at the Lava Cable Tephra, everything I have received form them has been excellent and pretty reasonable for what it is.

I use these and feel they sound great! Brings out the lows and highs of the amp.

cool. guys, thanks for the suggestions. Have any of you tried 12awg vs 10awg wire? any difference in your opinion

i got a Monster Cable Studio Pro 1000. i was like "woah, my amp has highs?"

Do you guys actually hear a difference in speaker cables? I have about 4 different kinds laying around and I don't hear any differences in any of them

Here we go again with the snake oil. What about the cheap wire inside your cabinet?

You upgrade it to the same wire used in the cable run, guage matters more than capacitance when referring to speaker cables.

Some simple scientific test proves its NOT snake oil... Though more of an issue for cabling not speaker.

Best & noteworthy:

- Van Den Hul Inspiration Hybrid
- Evindence Siren
- Cardas Crosslink

- Lava Tephra is a good value for money compromise into the mid-high end speaker market.

Depends how OCD you are about matching your cables, I like balancing my rig with cab wiring from same manufacturer.

I own the VDH and haven't experienced anything higher, and I'm picky about this stuff!

I really do hear and feel the differences!! I A/B'd my Planet Waves against my old trusty "Horizon" speaker cable and the difference was pretty apparent. The Planet Waves cable just sounded "better"...seemed like my old speaker cable was "thinning" out my tone where the PW made the tone more full. I don't know why, I just know it's better now.

Colossal cables colossus is my favorite.

I will second that, got one and compared it with the planet waves I was previously using. It was like having a new amp. The clarity was incredible with the collosal

I agree with the gauge part.

For a 3' run at guitar amp kind of signal levels, you don't need anything that thick. 16 would be fine. Any thicker, while harmless, won't buy you anything either.

Above...

that's good info.. this is one area I never really paid attention too in the same way that I did instrument cable..
