Best speakers for Friedman BE

I know this is such an open ended question, but I have a BE & a 4x12 coming soon & I am at a loss as to what to load the cabs with.

Dave suggests V30s, but they are too high endy & fizzy for me. I'm looking for something open sounding with a super tight bottom end & smooth highs & a good mids.

Any ideas?

I don't know man, your description of how you hear V30s are pretty much what I hear from my V30 Bogner cab. I think it really depends on the amp and cab. I had V30s in a Marshall cab and they sounded like shit - crisp and harsh. The same speakers in the Bogner cab are deep, smooth and fat.

Dave loads his cabs with greenbacks on the top and V30s on the bottom. And, as Todd suggested, you can't go wrong with Scumbacks.

I don't know man, your description of how you hear V30s are pretty much what I hear from my V30 Bogner cab. I think it really depends on the amp and cab. I had V30s in a Marshall cab and they sounded like shit - crisp and harsh. The same speakers in the Bogner cab are deep, smooth and fat.

Apparently Dave only recommends V30s now & loads all his cabs with these. No more Greenbacks.

When I palyed a Friedman for the 1st time, I think there were scumbacks in there, but that was a looooooong time ago & I have no idea what type.

I just can't stand the high endy fizzle of V30s, but Dave has amazing ears & if V30s are his speaker of choice, maybe I should reconsider. Ugh!!!!!

Weber Legacy? Pair them with something a bit more defined. Old Eminence Super V's are a secret weapon for tight clear bass and highs. Maybe try a doped G12h30 type as well. Clear and tight like a nun is supposed to be.

maybe the wgs v30 type, I think its a veteran 30. It is less harsh on high end

I use mine (Marsha) primarily with Scumback M75s which sound great. I also have a Marshall 4x12 with Dave's old recipe of V30s on the bottom and GBs on the top...it also sounds great and the only place I've ever really liked the V30 is in a Fender combo.

Dave voices his amps in a particular way that leads me to believe you should try his recommendations. When I tired tubes other than the ones that recommends (JJ EL34) I went right back to the JJs, even though I prefer others in other amps.

Much like tubes/pickups/tonewoods/pedals/etc, making a blanket statement about speakers doesn't really fly...you need to look at all of the variables collectively.

Well broken-in V30's are anything but harsh and fizzy.. I would go as far as saying they're pretty dark and mostly midrange, with controlled lows and smooth highs.

However, brand new V30's that aren't broken in are so harsh, it's like icepicks to the ears!

Just read the amp is coming SOON rather than in your possession now. I would say maybe consider Dave's suggestions because as some others have said here, he probably tailors his amps to sound best with certain things. Listening to clips of his amps, it sounds to me like a lot of the lower mids are emphasized vs strictly upper mids. V30's might just work with those. In a pinch though, go greenback/V30 so you only have to replace two speakers if you don't like the sound of the V30's.

I never tried it with all V30s so I can't comment. I think the GBs are more high endy and fizzly than the V30s (but not in a bad way...just more present), but they're pointed at my head (top of a slant cab).

It's a great combo without a doubt, but for some reason Dave now apparently likes a straight lineup of V30s better. I doubt you can go wrong either way.

Another thing to keep in mind is speaker age. A lot of players seem to give up on speakers before they've let them break in...not smart.

The V30 thing is my fault.

A few years back, I told Dave I liked the V30-loaded Bogner cab much better than the Scumback cab for the BE head I was trying out. He got a confused look on his face and said, "Really?" Then scratched his head, went back to his office muttering, "Hmm". I figured he'd come around sooner or later.

I tried a g12-h30 cab and hated it. Greenbacks seem to be the best of what I have tried. I did not try v30's yet.

The BE100 does NOT sound fizzy with V30's. That's what we are using in the shop as we speak.

I have had Marshalls & Shurs with V30s & they always sounded too harsh & high endy to me, but Dave is a genius so I'm torn between what to get.

When I tried the BE, it was at Tone Merchants with Scumback speakers & the tone was so good it broght teara to my eyes.

Perhaps if Scumback or another company makes a V30 clone, I can get theirs & have it broken in by them, as my BE will never be played at loud enough volumes to truly break the speakers in.

I'm interested in this point as well. I usually hate V30's but lately I've been thinking of selling my Scumbacks for 2 GB's and 2 V30's to run in a pattern together. Granted my amp is still at Dave's shop; but I'm curious to know what he voices mods/builds to now and what would bring out the best in the amp.
