Just don't dig Vai or his live bands anymore. Fire Garden and Ultra Zone tours were the shit and his most amazing live band, IMO. Not that this band doesn't sound good. Obviously these players have skills, but I think he is hiring a bunch of no name nerds that are cheaper when he used to always have some other notable musicians in his bands. Just my $.02. Obviously he is great as well, but he isn't doing anything new and exciting and that was kind of the cool thing about him was that he pushed boundries and wasn't afraid to be weird. I feel he is tapped out.
Weren't most folks who got their start with Zappa, including Mr. Vai, at one time "no -name nerds"?
If that's tapped out, then I'll have what he's having.

I have this video but haven't gotten around to watching the whole thing just yet. This thread has reminded me to do that.

Last night I just picked up a Frank Zappa live DVD from 1982 with a very young Steve Vai in it. Can't wait to check that one out.

Ya, the Blu ray of this baby rocks. Definitely worth the extra few bucks. He was using using the G-System at this time. Anybody know what the hell he's doing in the song where he's blowing into the top of his guitar? Can't remember what song it is or at which point in the DVD its at. But if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, basically. Vai, Keneally, etc. were nobodys until the Zappa band. It's like a school for guitar nerds, which IMO is awesome. When I see these new people it makes me think Vai wants to do the same thing. It doesn't make me think he's cheaping out.

anna marie is SO FUCKING HOT.

Why yes... YES SHE CERTAINLY IS!!!

Btw... friend of mine (RT lurker) has one of those Jems. Pretty neat looking too!

Wild stuff! That guitar would look SO much better with all green pickups, and black hardware. The pink really ruins it for me.

I need to get that on blu ray.

I did get his new album this week, it was kind of disappointing.

One listen so far. This one seems slower and darker than his usual work. Stellar playing, but I kept waiting for this album to pick up the tempo. There's usually some goofy fun in what he does, but it's largely missing from this album.

I love Racing the World. This is the sort of playing I like best from him, and there's only a couple tracks like it on the album

John the Revelator and Book of Seven are possibly the worst things I have heard this year. I don't want to listen to these two shit sandwitches again. One more rant, I really wish he wouldn't let some foreign chick yammer all over an otherwise cool instrumental. It was annoying during on the Ultra Zone album and it still sucks now.

Overall, not his best work. Except for those two "songs", it isn't offensively bad, like Queensryche's latest album.
