What a joke. That shit is just hilarious. He sounds more like a DJ than a guitarist.

You guys just don't get it. He tried to do something different and create his own style. He succeeded on a huge scale and is making a killing doing it, and has written far better songs than the vast majority on this board. Sour grapes FTL.

I was giving a guitar lesson yesterday, and the student asked me if I like audioslave. The tone of his voice suggested that he digs them. I lied and said I was unfamiliar with them but had heard good things about them

+1

Tom Morello moved more crowd at the Reading music festival in 5 minutes back in mid/late 90s than everyone on this board combined has or ever will. I love his riffs and style and most rock fans who aren't musicians themselves do too. That being said, some of his solos are tough to listen to.

Tom Morello's solos are like rap, musicians think it sounds like ass, but the masses like it :D

sounds like good record scratching, don't get me wrong I hate rap, but scratching goes back to the early 80s, breakin etc, I did like that shit

thread fails

oh yeah, I saw Rage live in about 95 with 311 and Cypress Hill, that was some fucking show, legendary even

Solo guitar doesn't have to be 394823094823472398472394723 notes per second guys. 80's isn't the only valid music. I just don't get how close minded people can be sometimes.

I don't like it either. I hate it. But it's his own thing. Why do guitarists have to be measured by your standards and your tastes? There are about million people who'd rather listen to that than Guthrie Govan. Well I'm the opposite but that doesn't give me the right to say one's better or one's shit. Which, I'm sure, if you ask any accomplished non-jerk guitarist today, he'll appreciate what Morello has done regardless of they like it or not.

Not everyone has to play the usual rock/ballad/blues whatever floats your boat kind of solo...

Again, I couldn't care less for RATM but still. They must've done SOMETHING right...

Spot on!

For the record, I dig Morello's playing.

My favourites are "Know your enemy" and "Like a stone."

A think lot of people like to rag on Morello because of his politics or the fact that he doesn't play "traditional" blues or shred solos, but these folks are missing the whole point...he's always been about big riffs, and Morello has written better riffs than I ever will and 90% of the rest of the people who bash him.

However, I remember him talking in a Guitar World interview once about working with Rick Rubin...he said "Rick doesn't like any solos that aren't Angus Young style solos" or something like that. I laughed at first because I thought Rubin just wasn't thinking outside the box...but then when I heard the solo on the first Audioslave record (I think it was "Bring 'em back alive"), I thought "Sorry Tom, but Rubin was right about that one!" That is easily one of the worst solos I have ever heard

Tom is kind of like Zakk Wylde to me in the sense that I dig his older stuff, but his recent stuff has become formulaic and uninspiring...I listen to the first Rage album and then Audioslave's "Out of Exile," and shake my head

I am not the biggest Rage fan, but I like some of there stuff. To me Tom Morello is a good guitarist. I do have to admit listening to Rage and his solos for more than 20 minutes starts to become very annoying. I can appreciate where he coming from, but it's just not happening for me.

Yep me too. The first one and Evil Empire are great IMHO. Ive not liked anything he's done since. Dude is a good player and has a very original and unique voice on the guitar. That is more than you can say about 95% of the guitarists who were in famous bands in the last 15 years.

Comments?

He is using the guitar to emulate the noise making sounds of that time period

For that specific task he seems to have adapted the instrument to the end result he wanted, I heard he can shred conventionally very competently but never followed him that closely...
