Either 1, 2, WACF, Fair Warning or 1984. Definitely one of those.

Diver down does have its moments, they just needed to wait until they had more original material written instead of doing all the damn covers.

I'm partial to 5150 from that era, but I'm in the minority.

its cool i mean i listen to each one constantly....i even really loe van halen 3...its pretty deep for them...so was balance

this is a question with an obvious answer, alot of great albums , but, hands down Van Halen 1, a game changer, no brainer,
nothing even remotely to it, before it

Definitely Fair Warning overall, but Ed's best tone is still on VHI, IMO.

I'm partial to Diver Down...just wish they could have included at least one more song. That album's gotta be 35 minutes long or something. But, yeah I remember buying the VH1 album in 1978 and setting a rock on top of my turntable in an effort to slow it down during eruption. I think I went through 3 or 4 copies of that album.

and on diver down, not sure why it's my favorite. Overall, i think the solos on each song are just killer. Typical VH...hop into the solo section with perfect rhythmic sense and no overkill, then right back into the song. I think the guitar playing on that one is under-appreciated also. Hang em High is damn near impossible to cover perfectly, Where have all the Good Times gone has that perfect guitar sound (on the edge of exploding), and Dancing in the Streets is one of those songs that the terrible radio stations would play as your riding on the school bus

Fair Warning is the only one that never leaves my player!

1. VH1

2. Fair Warning

3. Women And Children First

4. 1984

5. VH2

Fair Warning for me as well, although my favorite guitar tones are on VHII. Diver Down is the only weak Roth era album IMO.
