I love them all but if I had to shipwreck with just one it'd probably be FW.

VH2
Fair Warning
1984

Not a lot of separation in these for me:
5150
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
VH1

Another step down:
Women and Children First
Diver Down
ou812

tough question, for sure! for me,true Van Halen IS david lee roth-era....so with that in mind,my fav album - probably a "tie" between VH II & Fair Warning.if i absolutely HAD to pick one of these two, then i guess Fair Warning because of the song Unchained(because it's my all-time fav VH song along with Atomic Punk ;) )...VH1 is probably the most "classic",imo, being the first album of theirs.you cant deny the "feeling" you got as a youngster, back in the day, when you heard those first few opening bass guitar notes to Runnin' with the Devil, followed then by the crushing guitar chords which sounded like an amp ripping apart, about to EXPLODE.then immediately after that, getting caught by surprise and getting BLOWN THE F**K AWAY by the song Eruption......LIFE changed FOREVER after this album for me

I know I'm about to be shredded here, But I really like For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance. To me those albums just have a maturity in the material that's not there in any of the other albums.

But VH1 and 1984 are my favorite Dave albums!

Van Halen 1 (it was all downhill after that. :D)

Yup.

I am not a big Van Halen fan, but VH1 kicks some serious ass and was a definite game changer in the rock world.

VH1...my stranded on the island must have in the collection record.

VHII...see above.

Fair Warning...umm, see above.

Women and Children First...ok, see above.

Diver Down...underrated album, see above. Just gets a bad rap for the covers and it's short running time but like Bulbous said there's some serious playing on it and even those cover songs are damn good. Thing is, even though this is not my fav VH album I probably listened to this one as much as any of them. If you were at a party back then...this album was on.

1984

5150...despise Hagar but this is a fun album.

F.U.C.K...despise Hagar but this is a really good album and I actually can tolerate Hagar on this.

The rest...is rubbish...lol. Balance shoulda been titled...BORING. OU812 and then crapped it out. VH3...c'mon Ed, give us a break. Good tour though and probably the last time EVH really tore it up on guitar.

VH I for sheer balls/what the hell was that factor
VH II for guitar tones
Fair Warning for overall tunes (man, remember when that girl was prom queen?)

Pete

Of course it isn't VH-3   :gethim:  :scared:

Otherwise, it tends to be the VH album I tend to be listening to at the moment... Seriously!

I would order them like this. I almost look at them as two different bands. In bold are the albums I really like.

Roth era:
1. Fair Warning
2. VH1
3. VH2
4. 1984

5. Women and Children First
6. Diver Down

Hagar era:
1. 5150
2. For unlawful carnal Knowledge

3. OU812
4. Balance

The year Fair Warning came out I got the cassette for Christmas...it almost never left my walkman for 3 months. I took it everywhere....walking to school, after school, shoveling the driveway....lots of memories with that one.

VH1 is incredible though.

Fair Warning for me as well, although my favorite guitar tones are on VHII. Diver Down is the only weak Roth era album IMO.
I agree, VHII had some pissed off tones
