Best Wireless?

I have a Sennheiser 100 series guitar wireless and have been using it for a while, yet I know there is tone loss as a result. I understand that most people in a club notice nothing, however when I play my amps without the wireless, they come back to life.

I would appreciate any guidance on this. What are you using? What is your experience with tone loss? Is there a wireless system that doesn't have tone loss? If there is, what is the cost of TONE?

Thanks,
GtarLover

I have a rack mount line 6 Relay G90, and while it is the only wireless I've used, I rave about it, as do most others that own it! There is absolutely NO tone loss....none...zippo...nadda...NEGATIVE! Anyone that says otherwise is compeltely full of crap, and that is the consensus on these things. They are built extremely well, reliable, have really neat features (cable loss simulator, "mute" on the pilotpack, that lets you do silent tuning, tuner out, 12 channlels including a scan that scans the "best" channel even though they are ALL the best).

I litereally walked through like 7 walls with this thing BEHIND my amp, and INTO another house, and there was no drop....It is that good, and that was without in the antennas!!!!! I bought mine online brand new in the box for 470 bucks including shipping from an ebay store. I have absolutely no desire to try anything else, I am that impressed by this unit.

Thanks Ves...anybody else what to weigh in on the wireless topic??

The best, IMHO, is the AKG digital system. Steve Stevens turned me on to it, and I've been using it for a few months- not one single issue, dropout or negative thing to say. It sounds amazing- it has no character of it's own, just does the job without altering your tone at all. It has like 6000 available channels.... killer RF scan modes so you can pick the best channel, either automatically or manually, etc etc. It's pricey- $2500 or so. But it's the shit, as far as I'm concerned.

Excellent feedback guys...I had been looking into the high line Shure stuff.

Thanks Pete, I will take a look...that is definitely in the high priced region, yet I am done trying to make due with lesser gear that doesn't deliver in the end.

Still happy to have any feedback from others who have transparency and LOVE their wireless.

Had a few cheaper models and last year upgraded to the G90. I have no reason to ever look for another model. Sounds flawless, works great and is built like a tank. I bought an upgraded cable for the pack and everything is dreamy.

The cost of tone was a little out of budget with the AKG?

Maybe the title should have been "best budget wireless".

FWIW, I bought one of the Line 6 pedalboard wireless kits and it is every bit as good as the mid-market Shure stuff. Last gig though, I snatched it all off the board and went "wired". I am definitely not committed to wireless.

Lot's of the AKG's though in pro set-ups. It seems to be the default wireless for guitar.

Steve

I absolutely love my line 6 G50 I just bought. I traded in my shure for it, and never looking back. Hands down one if the best wireless systems for the money. I like more because our fits on my pedal board, that was a main selling feature for me. I make my own Mogami guitar cables and love them but I can say I don't notice a difference when I go to wireless. I highly recommend checking them out!

Well, the thread is titled "best wireless"

I'm telling ya what the best wireless is   AKG.
Yes it's pricey- but It's unbeatable. It's friggin perfect. OK- EXCEPT it needs an ISO transformer on the output (they are working on this). For now I use a cable on the output that has an iso transformer built in, that Dave Friedman made me. Otherwise u get a ground loop. OK that's the only downside. But it's an easy fix. U can use a Hum Eliminator- or this:

Otherwise, it's the king of all wireless units. I think they will soon incorporate (at my and others suggestions) the iso out into the unbalanced out right on the unit. Listen to me now, believe me later....

I sometimes miss using a wireless. But I don't miss pulling into Shell to buy 9Vs!!

Anyone knows of a system that you can get multiple transmitters and comes with a recharging dock?

I've used the shure, sampson and line6 stuff. the original line 6(x whatever) had some things I hated, but the new Relay units are very good. very little tone change/loss. respectable battery life. I have the G50 mounted in my head/rack road case no problem. plus I can put it on my pedal board just as easily

I use an AKG SR400, bought it 3yrs ago. $450 if I remember, no tone loss, no dropping of signal even with the antennas inside the rack on the back of the unit.

Hey Scott,

Those articles were really helpful. I appreciate it.

The only reason to go with the Shure SLX over the G90, given the sound was comparable, is AA batteries vs 9 Volt in the transmitter. Using rechargeable AA's is MUCH cheaper.

Kind Regards,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Thankfully the G90 transmitter uses AA batteries. The original X2 products used 9V. I wouldn't buy a wireless system today that uses 9V.

It's bad enough that my band's Shure PSM600 in-ear monitors use 9V... the new PSM900 (planning to upgrade for 2012) is AA. You definitely want AA rechargeables for a wireless system.

Oh, I'll add that in some environments, the SLX may give you more interference-free operation with its choice of frequency space. I personally haven't had any trouble since switching to the G90 in my A rig (moved the SLX to my B rig), but I had heard one guitar tech complain that he had trouble using G90s at some big festival gigs and had to fall back to his older technology Audio-Technica units for those shows.
