Great post.........

Thinking of trying a bridge PU in a maple neck-through guitar.....Currently has a Pearly Gates which is nice but I want to improve overall clarity which seems to be a characteristic commonly mentioned with any of the BKs.
Staying with the PAF vibe (love the org. T-Top in my 79LP cus.) what BK do you think would work best?????

Bill

Look at something in the Vintage Hot line. The PG is a bright pickup, so the VHII or Emerald might be right down your alley. They are both hot PAF types. I think you'd really like the VHII if you're coming from a PG.

Edit - just saw you've got a maple neck-through. You might wanna check out the Abraxas. It's got a rounded tip end that might really smooth out the brightness of the maple. You can email them and them now what you're playing through and what tone you're after, and they'll be able to suggest something for you. You gotta try one, man. Seriously. Seymour Duncan aren't even in the same league. You'll love them!

Yes the Pearly is bright......I paired it with a Gibby 300k vol.pot and that really helped but it came with a cost o
f some clarity.........I was checking out the VH11s and I do like those, I'm now thinking of putting that in a 79 Dean ML...

I will go back and search out the Abraxas a bit, thanks for that suggestion I didn't consider that one.....

Bill

the riff raff is a t-top killer
quite bright, though (if that's a problem)
the mule is also bright, but warmer, and also clearer than a PG
the abraxas is a hotter and more compressed pickup, but the scatterwinding and the alnico 4 makes it keep some of the mule warmth and clarity
the black dog sounds pretty good with maple necks, but I wouldn't call it PAF-like
it has a more midrangy, modern, dense and intense dimarzio-like vibe, although it's a low output model

Ericsabbath, you're deserve resident BKP Ph.D status

I need to check out the Abraxas.

I gotta ask...WTH is that thing in your sig? I'm hoping it's some kind of Mr. Potatohead thing, but it really looks like a giant scrotum.

  Was thinking the same thing

and now the Cold Sweat is sounding damn good too.. Tough choice between a ceramic nailbomb and a Cold Sweat for the bridge

I always rabbit on about this, but I have the following BKPs:

C-Bomb in a Custom 24
Aftermath in a Custom 24
A-Bomb in a Les Paul Custom
Had a Holydiver in a Suhr GG too.

They are so clear and tight. The C-Bomb in the PRS is my personal favourite: such a massive sound, yet so full of character. Tight but warm. Just amazing.

Next will be putting Riff Raffs in my McCarty, I think (only the bridge, because I LOVE the PRS 57/08 neck). Might replace the A-Bomb in my LPC with a Cold Sweat, or possibly just another C-Bomb!

I have a Painkiller in a maple neck through, ebony board, mahogany winged BRJ, and its not too bright or brittle whatsoever like one may expect it to be. This guitar is quite heavy, in the Les Paul Custom range, so it has alot of natural low end which fills out the sound. I keep hearing the Painkiller recommended for predominantly mahogany guitars, but I can now attest its killer in an all (almost) maple configuration as well.

ceramic bkps in general sound great in maple
some alnico mid heavy models like the holy diver and black dog also sound amazing in maple

best sounding guitar I ever had was a 96 mccarty with the riff raff in the bridge position

Painkillers are a special animal. VERY growly and potent. Not my idea of a "classically" voiced pup, but for the music my PK equipped guitar plays (metal, prog, industrial) it's perfectly suited.

 Thanks Ventura I will take that into consideration......Really liking Abraxas and RiffRaff clips so far even though they are different from each other.......

I have a little bit of concern as to whether the Ceramic nailbomb in the bridge with make my SE Cu24 too bright or "middy" or if the alnico V would be too dark.

C-Bomb is perfect in a Custom 24. Sounds perfectly balanced in mine, super-tight but very warm.

Oh very nice, I just assumed they were all hot/active pickups

Not at all, Check out their webpage. Lots of different flavors there.

yeah I'm doing that now. If I had a spare les paul I'd probably through some in there but I only have the one and I really don't want to take the burst buckers out of it, they sound great.

I have an EC-1000 that I might put a pair in if I don't end up selling it
