If they would have continued doing the same thing they already were people would criticize them for not evolving and playing it safe just rehashing the same thing.

AC/DC seem to have done just fine.

I want to say Slayer, but they got silly in the 90's with breakdown shit ala limp biskit or whatever that lame excuse for a band was.

When I think of the Black album, I still see the image of old grannies in their rocking chair listening to Nothing Else Matters while some songs of previous albums would just have killed them instantly.

R.I.P. Metallica
25 years ago today you passed. You will never be forgotten.

I miss you Metallica
Right on! When I first saw the "Enter Sandman" video I said, "what the fuck is this weak ass shit?" Then along came the millions of fake ass metal fans that a year earlier would rip on people like me who were already into Metallica and real metal. They should have just changed their name on the Black album. Fuck that album and Metallica.

My sentiments as well....

Ah yes, I remember. This was the album that marked the time I stopped listening to Metallica.

Besides, the epic "Rust In Peace" by Megadeth was out... no comparison.

Exactly.
I'd been listening since Kill. When I heard Enter Sandman I was so indifferent. This album didn't move me at all. Haven't cared for them since. Love that they've been successful but I'm not interested.

Recording the same type of album over & over is the real sellout. No band if they are true artists & have any integrity at all can possibly enjoy writing in the same style over & over without wanting to shoot themselves.

It takes being true honest musicians to try different styles if you want to & not be afraid (especially after having success) to record what you want & not pander to the diehard fans who just want you to stay in that one particular style they love you for.

Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, King Nothing, Until It Sleeps, Hero Of The Day, The Memory Remains, Fuel etc.......cemented their legendary status as much as anything from Master Of Puppets , Ride The Lightning, AJFA & Kill 'Em All also did.

You end up with a band that has passionate fans that love it all......passionate fans that only love the early stuff & passionate fans that only love stuff from the Black album onward. That's called winning folks!

You end up with a band that is ridiculously successful, & who got to keep things fresh & exciting for themselves by exploring different writing & production styles they were honestly into.........& didn't keep trying to write Master Of Puppets or the Black album over & over & over......

No one said a band shouldn't be reaching for new music. We said we didn't like what they did. Or, in my case, I was indifferent. It didn't move me at all.

Love The Black Album along with the first 4. Personally I am glad they changed. I even liked the change with Load and Reload. I like diversity in a band. Bands that can't change and sound the same album after album get boring quick IMO and rarely survive as long as Metallica has.

I know this album is polarizing, but I just never understood it. The Black Album is killer and heavy as fuck. Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam, My Friend Of Misery, Enter Sandman, etc are all killer songs. 90s Metallica is heavier than most shit today. Down tuning or speed picking doesn't make something heavy. The Sad But True intro is my definition of what heavy sounds like.

I'm a Metallica fan boy though. I love each and every album and listen to them all regularly.

This exactly. Nobody said that they should have done the same album over and over again. Their first four albums were different enough from each other to know that they weren't going to do that anyway. What they did with their slick haircuts, slick production, and less aggressive tunes was a conscious effort to go in a much more commercial direction
and try to appeal to everybody, instead of the hardcore fans that put them on the map. And that's fine, but many of their loyal fans, including myself, turned their back on them as a result. And that's fine too, the come lately, band wagon jumping fans can have them, there's plenty of smaller, hungrier bands, especially in the underground, that have been putting out far superior metal than them anyway.

I'd dare say that the Black album did more to cement their legendary status than the first 4 albums did - with the caveat of that status being with a more mainstream commercial audience. In a way they have become what they beheld.

I liked it.

At least they didn't remake the same old songs and albums over and over and over--->*cough Yngwie cough*

You're out of your mind. If they had never put out those first four and only showed up in 1991 with the black album they'd be looked at like Nickleback.

"The album debuted at number one in ten countries and spent four consecutive weeks at the top spot of the Billboard 200, making it Metallica's first album to top album charts. By February 2016, the album spent 363 weeks on the Billboard album chart, making it one of the ten longest running discs of all time. Metallica is one of the best-selling albums worldwide, and the best-selling album in the United States since Nielsen SoundScan tracking began. The album was certified 16× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2012 and has sold over sixteen million copies in the United State, the first album in the SoundScan era to do so."

Can any of the haters say the same thing about any of their albums?

Haters gonna hate.

Just like Guns n Roses were instantly huge out the gate with Appetite..........if the Black album was Metallica's first introduction to the world in 1991, then they would have been instantly mega huge hard rock/metal gods. No question......

the Nickleback reference is beyond ridiculous :scared:

Then I must be out of my mind cause I see no parallel between Metallica.....at ANY point in their career.... and Nickleback......

Hmm, shouldn't it be more like opinioner's gonna opinionate? We're all entitled to that aren't we? You miss the point of what most of who you label as "haters" are saying......that they----key word here being they--don't care for it.....like it matters to them how many copies it sold? If my reason for liking something.....anything...is because because 16 million others like it, perhaps I should worry more about being a "non-hater".

They were progressing just fine from KEA to AJFA.
