I've built a couple of new guitars using all black hardware this time and find the hardware to be kind of sticky. They both have black locking tuners, one Sperzel and the other Schaller. Both have black tremolos, the trems are Wilkinson VS100. What I find is that the tuners wind up a bit before the pitch goes up or down. Then after playing a bit, it goes out of tune and takes one or two tuning adjustments before they stay in tune. I put some pencil lead and sanded inside the nut a bit to make sure the nut wasn't causing the problem. It seems like they've gotten a tiny bit better over the past week, so maybe the black coating needs to wear?
As for the tremolos, well the springs seem to be a bit stiffer than the chrome trem springs, and where the trem meets the posts, it tends to stick. Once I get it tuned up, if I touch the trem bar, it goes a bit out of tune, but resting my hand on the trem helps nudge it back into tune. It's like it sticks somehow. I use 4 springs on every guitar to make sure there is enough tension to return the trem back to level when I dip the bar, but the black tremolo and springs seem to stick.
Has anyone noticed similar issues with black hardware? What can I do to get the tuners to work more smoothly, or will I just have to wait until it wears in?
