if you were picking up an evh 5150 III, or blackface chrome chassis dual recto which would one you get, and why ? ... modern metal type music would be its use

Thank god we have 20 year olds on this forum that can record and engineer better than camp vh or we would all be saying Recto.................................................

I have recently owned a MKV, Single Rec Series 2 with the additional mode, 5150 III, and an Uberschall TJ purple mod. The Über and 5150 III are my favs. The 5150 III is very flexible and ch1 is really great. It will crunch good and takes boosts well. I use a Jetter Red II with it mainly but have an OCD and AC Boost for flavors.

I have never been a fanboy equipment guy but the EVH III is an excellent amp. You can cover lots of sonic territory with it. Ch 1 and a tele actually sounds good.

I would say to play each as much as you can and pick.

Good Luck!

I am a hardcore Recto guy. And I would choose the EVH. More channels and more versatility.

My 5150 III didn't last longer than a week with me. Good amp, but I just prefer the recto overall. It's like a 5150, I can never be without one.

I wasn't a fan of the EVH, has an indistinct midrange to my ears. I prefer the grimy mids and bassiness of the Recto series amps. Unless you've got a line on a BF Dual, try to find a same era Triple, that'll be the trick.

i have actually owned a 2ch dual recto (non blackface), and an original evh 5150 III . i remember liking them both, but it has been so long since i played either i dont recal which one i would have preferred more. i am trading my fja evh which ended up not being my thing, and am not sure which way to go

Had them both (Rev F Blackface & 1st run EVH). Kept the 5150III--In my eyes, there was no comparison. The Mesa was great, but required constant tweaking and would get buried in a band mix. The EVH, in this regard, is an indisputable monster. You will always be up front no matter what. I also felt the Mesa didn't let the true character of the guitar shine through as easily. To each his own.

Some people make a recto sound fing amazing. I have not a lot of time with one, but I never quite gelled with the ones I tried to play through. the EVH III for me has been awesome from the first time I plugged into it. Great sound, up front, records really well...

Recto for me, but at least some of that opinion is sort of like how old blues guys are stuck in their ways; it is what I know. It has been what "metal" has meant to me for a long time.

You are right, the real pieces of the pie that are missing from the VH reunion are Ted Templeman and Donn Landee.

I've got a blackface recto preamp and I remember loving channel 3 on the evh and hating the rest. At this point, I'd go for the Recto, I like it's tone a bit more. Have you thought of a Road King S2? You couls use en34's and get into EVH/ plexi-ist territory.

I've had both, and both are great. I decided to keep the EVH because it was more versatile. Under the mic, you can get them to sound similar, but I preferred the midrange grind the EVH has. Clips:

Great clips, I like that 3rd one. That thing sure does have a ton of gain and grind. Now, why in the heck is anyone modding these things?

There is nothing cooler than an early small logo black face recto. Throw a pair of KT88's and a pair of KT66's and it's turned into a monster of an amp.

That's what I want to know. The amp is pretty much perfect stock. There's zero need to mod it.
