I had John Bolin build me one of these about 4 years ago. I own #5. The body is hollowed out and the neck is hollowed (never heard of that before this). The guitar weighs about 2.5lb and you can hear and feel the tone with it. Anyway, the Pearly Gates in the bridge is a fantastic pick up. Lots of pinch harmonics and just the right amount of gain. It will turn your Tele into a grinding machine. Mine is just like this, even down to the "hand-rolled" in the PU route.

Get the hot Anderson tele stacked single coil for the bridge. Its awesome!!! I'm using some YJM's for my neck and middle on mine (yes mine has a middle pickup). I think with a tele you really need the bridge single coil...that sound is very handy.

I would exhaust my options as far as pickups and bridges go and then if I found nothing that would work, I'd rout. Even then it may not end up being all that. It's all a crapshoot IMO.

There are so many options with bridges and pickups that I can't see not finding something that would drop in to make it work without routing. I've had teles that chunk and teles that spank. You really can get a lot of different sounds out of these things depending on what you do.

If I were to rout, I'd try some TV Jones front and back. I haven't tried that yet, but that sounds like a cool combo on a tele. But that's just me.
