dude i came across one of your videos on youtube where you used the EVH bridge pickup into your 1968 clone.

that sounded killer bro great setup and speakers

whats your opinion on the EVH bridge pickup? do you have other pickups that you can compare it to like a JB or a SH-6?

im thinking about putting together an air norton/EVH bridge in my ESP.

thanks

my favorite VH type pickup is the motor city 2nd degree blackbelt that dave friedman had told me about roughly a year ago.here is a video i made the other day with it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZL4JQQ21Qs

its the pickup into a mxr flanger then EVH phase 90 into theb oss ge10 eq into amp..the amp is on 10 and goes to a home made load box that takes a line level and feeds the peavey classic 120 power amp (im using el34 in the amp) pushing my 4-12 cabinet with real 1972 greenbacks with the 003 cones.im also using a little wet dry wet setup with homemade 1-12 cabinets on the side.just using a lexicon for stereo delay..

I had the MCP blissbucker which was supposed to approximate the EVH pickup in the 25,000 frankie. it killed for those tones! sold it to ratter on here. I wonder how different these two pickups sound. that sounds spot on.

awesome!

you're nailing the fuck out of that shit!

Very cool, thanks. Time to check out Motor City pickups.

sorry J didnt mean to leave everyone out in the dark - the video you linked was the youtube link though so you found it :)

i think i still like the EVH pickup over the MCP, im not really trying to replicate ed's tone, i just want something thats close to my old wolfgang's pickup.

didnt they release the fender bridge and neck pickups at seymour duncan this year for purchase? i wonder how those compare to the old wolfgang ones, or the EVH brand?

Go ahead, say it..."made you look". Glad I did find it, cool tones! :D

Seems they're both higher output, than say a Duncan 78 or 59 or PAF from what I'm reading. I too am not looking to replicate Ed's tone, but like the PAF sound with more balls, so always interested to hear about those.

yeah i also agree i love the PAF balls to the wall pickup tone. i like the linear breakup and the tone that it gives off like the pickup is on its last leg.

i also like the hotness of them, as they are easy to play.

i wonder if anyone here owns a new fender wolfgang that can describe them to the original wolfgangs or other pickups in general?

i know there were a few topics about the fender wolfgang when they first released, i might go digging and see if anyone mentioned the pickups in depth.

Thanks guys!!!I hear the new EVH wolfgang pickup sounds better than the old wolfgang pickup, but I haven't tried one yet.I like the paf type pickups better with the plexi, but prefer the EVH frankenstein pickup with higher gain amps like the soldano slo or the 5153...

Not to derail, but since you seem to be a guy who tries a lot of pickups... ;)

Have you (or anyone else here) tried a Duncan Custom A8 magnet-swap yet? I hear it's the perfect "PAF with balls" sound, people rave about it on the Duncan forum, contemplating trying one myself.

well the JB uses an alnico 5 magnet, and the SH-6 uses a ceramic magnet. i like the grit and power of the ceramic magnet in the bridge position because the alnico magnets are a clearer and leave less wildness to the pickups character.

i do hate the distortion you get with the SH-6 though, the wolfgang pickup was the best of both worlds - great grind without muddy distortion.

im supposing the alnico 8 magnet is stronger? you would think it would do the opposite effect?

i always tend to love alnico magnet pickups in the neck though, 9/10 i have done pickup tests and the ones i love the most are the 5's.

Supposedly the A8s have all the grit and bass response of a ceramic with the more pleasant top end of an Alnico in any pickup...more "best of both" references to be made. The Duncan forum guys report success with JB8s and 598s too.

what pickups are they swapping? JB's and SH-6's?

because supposedly they are the same pickup coil wise just different magnets.

i wonder what an old wolfgang pickup with an A8 switch would sound like

Excellent tone and playing! You've got the tone nailed.

Funny, for all those guys saying that tone is all in da fingers...I guess bmf5150 cut off Ed's fingers and replaced his own with E'ds...

The SH/TB-6 and the JB are the same wind - the Distortion has an extra larger ceramic magnet & spacers under the baseplate, I'm told. Standard JB has an A5 (Seymour's personal one has an A2, so they say).

Much like the Custom (ceramic), CC(A2) and C5(guess, lol) are all the same wind. Magnets make a big difference. The old Wolfgang with an A8 may rock indeed...

The correct gear will get you close, true- but betting even bmf5150 would say he sounds like himself playing Ed licks through similar gear (not saying that like it's a bad thing - he's got the riffs nailed too! :D ). Only Ed is truly going to sound like ED regardless of what he plays through. ;)

excellent info on the custom, custom custom, and custom 5

someone recommended i try out the duncan custom since i like the SH-6 but not the distortion - so that i dont loose the sh-6's character.

if i could get a wolfgang pickup and ahold of an A8, and also get ahold of a doner pickup (model?) and switch it, i would love to see what would sound better/best.

since the wolfgang is supposedly a hot PAF, im sure it runs an alnico 5.

i guess if you could space the A8 with a few pieces of paper you could replicate the spacing difference of the JB versus SH-6 and get the wilder side of things i presume.
