just threw this together, ive only been playing through this amp since i got it and i love it. it has such a nice crunch and the tone is so thick and rich. people who say that it cant do metal are nuts, sure it doesnt have as much gain as any of the mesas i have in my room here but it gets plenty saturated and can deffinetly pull it off. has a really nice classic marshall-y vibe to it

playing my ESP Kamikaze 3 with an EMG 81 in the bridge and the stock combo speaker is a celestion CL80. and yea the amp was barely even on. i think it sounds decent considering the low volume it was at.

let me know what you think

Sounds good.

You always seem to pull out heavier/aggressive tones out of amps that I've had different experiences with and this one is no exception.

I needed to boost my old Shiva (2004 model with no bright switches) to get even close to that, the built in boost was too round sounding for that type of tone so I left it off and used a pedal to add the aggressive top end/edge.

Even a 20th Shiva would have to be set close to stun with some of the options engaged that yours doesn't have to approach that at least from my experience.

It's very cool that you can extract those tones without any external help, especially at lower volumes.

sounds plenty heavy for not having a boost in front....feeling gas!

yea you know at times i like the boost and i dont, i think it sounds good both ways. but the boost does give it that little extra push to get into the brootz territory. otherwise in all honesty i think the boost masks the real rich tone of the amp lol. i dont own a boost pedal like a tubescreamer so i wont exactly try it but it does make me curious.

but i do think even without the built in boost function the amp has enough gain for hard rock/metal. its not as modern as some of the amps more suited for the style but it can deffiently pull it off. it has that cool 80's hot rod marshall vibe that i love.

I feel kind of stupid for saying this but I didnt know the Shiva could get that much gain. That sounds amazing!!

Can absolutely do metal, and this proves it.......when you started playing, I thought it sounded kinda like an 80s Marshall and felt bad, but then you said the same thing so I feel better now. :D
Nice riffs too.

The shiva's I've played didn't sound like that without an external boost!

How much gain do those EMG pickups add exactly? I can tell you I had a Shiva 20th that didn't have that much gain and I always boosted it.

i dont know about adding gain but they deffinetly tighten everything up. thats why i like them, because of their fast pick attack and tight percussive low end. you can go nuts with your right hand speed and they never fall apart

LOVE IT!!! :rawk: :rawk: :rawk: :rawk:

And THIS is why it's going to be my first gear related acquisition for 2012

GOOD VID!! GOOD VIBE!!

I've played a few Shiva's and none of them sounded like that

no mods were done to the amp at all. the 2 shivas ive played besides mine also sounded like this. they can get saturated nicely. i did swap out some of the preamp tubes, i have a tung sol gold pin in the V1, 2 regular tung sols in the V2, and phase inverter ... the rest of the tubes are the chinese shit bogner uses stock in their amps

i never understood how bogner is a boutique company that charges out the ass for their amps but they put the cheapest shit chinese tubes in their amps.

I've owned a number of Shivas and none have gotten that gainy without a tweak or 2. Does the presence control still work? Almost sounds like the NFB gave up the ghost. Sounds great :)

One of my favorite simple amp mods, disconnect the NFB. Some amps love it (Mesa Dual modern mode for example), some don't.
NFB???

I agree with the majority. I had a Shiva and it sounded nothing like this. This one's front end sounds boosted in some form to me. Now the 20th Shiva......that's a different story.

why would i lie about boosting the amp. only the amp boost function was on in this clip.

It's the "Big Rich" effect imo.

I hear it in all your clips, with any amp. There's something about your clips that sounds like the amp has something extra going on (even if there isn't).

I can just imagine someone running out and buying a Shiva based on this clip, plugging in and going WTF this doesn't sound like Big Riches clip.

Yep. His right hand pick attack and EMGs is going to sound heavier than someone with a softer right hand and lower output pickups. Also, don't think people are realizing that the Kamikaze 3 is a maple body/ebony fretboard. That + an EMG is probably going to sound fairly aggressive into any amp IMO.

Yeah...even my newer version Shiva "with bright switches" never sounded like that. When I read he was using EMGs I figured that was the difference...or that input chord tucked behind the amp is hiding something

the chord is tucked behind the cab because its a 20ft mogami and i keep it back there to keep it neat and not all over the place where im tripping over it

a new vid is on the way to prove the amp was not boosted

I believe you that it's not boosted. But do you have a more standard strat/tele/lp type guitar with passive pickups you could use to compare to the maple body/ebony board kamikaze w EMGs, too? That would help I think.
