How does it compare to modern high gain amps like Diezel/Engl/Mesa for prog metal ?

Heavy rhytm tone?
Lead tone?
Thick and organic or super tight hi fi sounding?
Sounds good at bedroom volume?

I bought one when they first came out. In all honesty it had to be the worst amp I have ever owned. Channel one is complete shit and channel 2 not much better. I have owned 3 other older Ubers and the TJ is nothing like them. I was very dissapointed with it. I get better tone in my bathroom 20 minutes after eating Chinese food.

I play the same style music, and i think it sounds great, however the KT-88's sound like shit, low volumes are bad in the Twin Jet too.
It's a dark sounding amp,i have Rev 1 and it's much brighter,it chugs well, and you hear every note,
I find Marshall cats think TJ's are shit but i've been using Boogies for 20+ years so depends what you want out of an amp.
I like it better than my Diezel for this kind of music.

Well im not looking for a marshall crunch out of this amp...more something like a recto with no fizz and a good lead tone too? Maybe i should buy an Herbert instead? Engl seems super tight and bright...i want a more loose natural tone but very heavy, thick and modern.

I had my buddys TJ for a week or two and i could not disagree more. It was a very organic sounding amp, like all Bogners. Most definitely not a hi-fi amp. My VHT Ultra Lead is definitely tighter. But when i played the TJ in stereo with my XTC Classic the combined tone was the richest tone Ive ever heard. Ive often thought about selling the UL and picking up a TJ since.

Have you considereda Mk V? I was pretty impressed with some of Petruccis clips of just him and a Mk V.

If your looking for that Mesa recto tone why not buy a recto? I have heard the 2010 Recto's are killer. I heard they are the best Recto's to date. IMO I hated the TJ. I really think it was the worst amp I bought. I never blended it with any other amps. I run a W/D/W rig and I didnt like anything about the amp.

One of the best amps money can buy. Saying it's the worst amp someone ever bought just sounds like someone not knowing what they're doing.

Believe me I know what im doing. I have had some of the best amps going and the TJ didnt compare or keep up. I compared it to many amps and out the door it went. Im not telling anyone what to buy. Im just stating my opinion. Go ahead and buy one.

Interesting thread

Alright, here it goes. I had the TJ, a brand new one, loaded with KT88s, fully stock. I found the amp to be an incredible amp at going full bore with nu-metal tones, prog-metal, and a host of other "more aggressively voiced" styles of play. Was the tone good? It was f*ckin' off the hook good. I found the amp had some idiosyncracies and oddities in how it EQ'd out, but using that ol' adage of "adjusting with yer ears, not yer eyes" definitely met the mark with this head. Now, as for 'bedroom levels', I'm sorry - don't buy this amp if you're just sitting in your home jammin' away like a wannabe. No dice. This thing is ridiculously powerful and needs to be opened up to breathe. Did it sound okay at lower volumes though? Hell yeah. But not as good as noon-plus :D

I ran mine through a matching UberKab - V30/G12T75. Thing was outrageous. Now, the crux of the biscuit is that I DID end up selling it. I sold it because I found its 'specialty' was a little too pinpointed for my otherwise 'broader' spectrum of musical play. Being only 2 channels, it wasn't able to easily go from crunch to grind to gainy to ripppin to snarlin' without a serious timeout and EQ tweak. That said, when it was on, it was seriously on. The tone is rich, thick, organic, loaded with overtones, sure it's compressed, but not sterile or anything of the like. I've had cats I know own this amp and they can conjure a LOT of sounds from it. I'm just not as patient. But for balls to the walls serious metal and louder than most heads out there, it'll tear a new @sshole in most of the competition.

Here's my blurb on it:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=64012&p=730141&hilit=twin+jet#p730141

And here's a terrific clip from TM:

If I could have it back, I probably would...and maybe one day, I'll score another one and not let it go. It was a killer amp, hands down.

Peace,
Mo

I don't think you'll be disappointed,it runs thick and doesn't weez out, like I said, the louder the better and with that thickness you hear the notes with clarity. If somebody wants to play Dokken or Ratt etc probably the amp to use,I'm going to change the tubes to 6550's though.

I LOVE my Twin Jet. So much more articulate than the other Uberschalls. Unbelievably loud and powerful, yet with a lot of harmonic richness and clarity. Surprisingly versatile as well, if you take the time to actually dial it in properly and pretty much forget all the traditional settings and the tones they're associated with, especially on Channel One. I had mine modified to accept either EL34's or KT88's/6550's with a flip of a switch, thus increasing its versatility tremendously. I personally think 6550's are the best with this amp.

If you have the chance to get one, do it. It's one serious amp that you'll either love or hate depending on your tastes (as evidenced by this thread), but definitely worth a shot.

Awesome amp. My favorite of all the Uberschalls. I have owned each version at least once. Love the TJ. Killer amp and yeah I have had all the usual suspects like Diezels, VHTs,Mesa's , Camerons, Splawns etc. GREAT amp!!!

Thanks V!

can we clarify what makes the TJ the worse amp ever?chinese food a side...

I'm interested too, there are obviously far worse amps out there. I think a lot of hate comes from the KT88s and their tonal characteristics, not from the amp itself. There are a lot of guys who changed to EL34s in the amp and were much happier with it.

Thx for your help guys! Well, i lisened to a lot of clips and it certainly dont seems to sound like the worst amp to me(found some clips with pretty amazing tone) but i fear it wont be a good bedroom amp like Ventura said...same with the recto..ive heard some great and some absolutely shitty clip of it so im not sure how it would sound if i cant push it enough.

Borrowed a friend's TJ for a few days. Did not dig that amp at all. So much bass in channel 2 it is ridiculous. Like to the point of hilarious. Super loose, too. Channel 1 was better to my ears, but not much.

ENGL Powerball II is something you should really check out. I have owned or had in my possession just about every modern hi gain amp out there and the Powerball II is as good or better than just about any of them. I like it waaaaay more than the Herbert I owned. I can actually get a very similar tone as the Herbert out of the PB II but it is tighter and has a quicker attack.

Well, there are far more users of the Mesa's than there are of the TJ's - so maybe this sums it up as far as 'most popular'. As for bedroom volumes, tough place to be... No big name, signature sound laden amp is ever going to sound like it really is meant to at bedroom levels. That being said, I play a lot at the 9 and 10 o'clock mark when practising, and I manage to conjure some great tone (just not as good as at 1 o'clock onwards :D )

The TJ is a unique sounding amp. Perhaps Mesa, not so much. If unique is something you're striving for, give it a shot. If you're gigging with it, it won't let you down. The bass is indeed off the hook, but roll it back and let it fly. I found it wasn't overly loose in the higher volume domains when matched with the UberKab. To each their own. Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and if it ain't yers, it typically stinks.

Good luck.

(FWIW, hands down, the best 'bedroom level' musical implement for me as a guitarist has been the Axe-II, can't beat it - eargoggles or simply poweramp-to-cab, thing kills... Just sayin')
