Bogner Uber Ultra 150W KT88 : Noise Issue?

I know you are a big fan of Wizard amps. What is your favorite Wizard for metal?? HR or MTL??

Well I sold my HR. The UU is voiced in the same vein as the HR. I did like the HR more for it's clarity and punch, but for the price, the UU gets me close enough for those tones that I didn't need the HR. the MTL KT150 mk2 is my favorite. Also love my KT66 MTL 50w. I'd keep those over the UU.

As someone who only really cares about modern metal tones, the hell razor smoked the Uber ultra. I haven’t played a mtl, but the hell razor and mi beta are my two favorites I’ve played so far. Uber ultra was definitely good, but especially with the noise , I felt that the mi and Wizard covered enough of what it does.

Polished sounding amps are not my thing either. I also dislike seeing certain amp builders getting 'polished' by certain 'gear influencers'. That also results in pig squealing noises when too much polishing is applied.
I like my dirty amps to sound dirty.

Hermansom 5 gain stage Marshall and Wizard MTL2 are the best imo . I passed on hell razor because I been told by a few wizard owners it was too smoothed out and not as agressive as mtl2 . I guess I’d have to try myself but like you I have 2 amps that did what others don’t do .

I definitely think the hell razor gets as aggressive as I’d need tbh. And Hermansson 5 stage is what I’d get if it was possible to find one lol

Also one just sold for $6500 . That’s preset wild . The Hermansom 5 gain stage that is

I said it's more smooth compared to the MTL I have (not MTLs in general. lol)

Msybe I said it wrong . But I meant exactly that . I know MTLs are not smooth . I know that for a fact too .but I followed ya

Yeah gonna chalk those with Larry amps as unobtainable for now. Outside of gowers which I’ve seen for sale, not much else I wanna try that is particularly purchaseable. Kinda a shame

I been waiting for my Larry . One year left . Lol it’s a long wait but I said fuck it

I been hearing alot of the noise issues on the UU... but is it some kinda "white noise" at even when you wind down all the gain mids treble knobs completely? Or it happens only when gain tune to a near ultra high gain situation ? If so have you guys tried quieter less gainy preamp tubes like 12AX7As or the sovteks ? Or a cleaner less gainy output? On either V1 or PI?

I'm wondering this too. On the older Uberschall versions, the sweet spot for the gain knob is about 1-2:00, with going max on the control giving insane, unusable amounts of gain. Diming the gain and using Ultra mode would make it out of control. Most people on Youtube are using Ultra mode with the gain at around 10-11:00.

If I had the gain at 9-10 o’clock on the ultra channel, it would just squeal. If you watch Blake’s video of when he first turned in his UU, that “squeal” or whatever is what I was experiencing constantly.

Yep same. This is definitely the fault of the amp not external factors

This hasn't been my experience at all.

This is a clip of the Bogner UU in Ultra mode with the gain at 9:00. Boost OFF. Metamorph set at about noon.
Guitar bridge pickup engaged, guitar volume on 10. No noise gates active anywhere. I was sitting about a foot away from the amp when recording this just a minute ago.

The noise here is almost imperceptible. It would be negligible in a mix.

This clip has some noise, but again, the Boost was set to ON, there were no noise gates active, and the guitar volume was on 10. But even with the Gain only at 10:00, that's a ton of gain you're hearing there. Even as somebody with an unhealthy obsession with distortion, I would probably never go higher than that under these settings. The way the Gain knob works in this mode is a bit non-intuitive and the knob only has a very small usable range like this. It helps to remember that the channel 2 Gain knob's range and taper were designed to accommodate every mode in channel 2. The Gain's taper makes a lot more sense when you consider it has to work with the Crunch mode, boost off as well. In Uber mode with the boost set to ON though, 10:00 is about as high as I'd recommend even the the most heavily corpsepainted black metal guitarists dial the gain.

Even still, the amount of noise is in those clips is nothing any noise gate on the market couldn't immediately take care of. Also, Ultra mode uses 7 gain stages which is nuts, so yes, noise is just going to be a factor here. Any amp with that many gain stages with that much gain is going to produce noise.

Overall though, very little noise for the amount of gain. If you're experiencing "uncontrollable squeal" under these settings, I dunno, did you have the master and channel volumes dimed, and were you standing right next to the speaker, using non-potted pickups? It's easy to dial in the gain and engage the boost in Uber mode and the gain and noise will be managable with the Gain around 12:00-2:30 or so, but when you just flip the switch to Ultra mode, the noise floor is going to blast through the ceiling and be literally as loud as the guitar itself.

I know how to set an amp. There was squeal on the ultra mode at nearly every volume regardless of drive or volume settings.

I’m in the same boat. I have a ton of really high gain amps, so it’s not my first rodeo. There was definitely something waaayyy off on the 2 UU I had. I wish mine sounded like those clips that were just posted! Maybe it’s something with the 150 Watt? Who knows…
