Bogner Uberschall owners question

Just got a rev 2 uber.

I think something may be wrong.

the clean channel has to have the vol and gain dimed to get any decent clean volume.

the gain channel is plenty loud and has lots of gain, but not uber gain.

my peavey 5150 easily has way more gain.

I checked all the tubes and fuses.

Is this the way the amp is?

with gain and vol maxed on the clean channel there is no breakup, the channel stays clean.

help needed

i had read that there were volume discrepancies between the channels, but this is ridiculous.

Ya, unfortunately, that is normal. Sounds like you may have other issues too. The gain channel should have alot of gain!

They're an interesting breed. I've had several iterations. If it wasn't the quiet Ch1. and the earth shattering Ch.2 volume scenario, it was the "this EQ doesn't act like its supposed to" situation with the TwinJet. I loved 'em, but they were difficult creatures to figure out. So it goes.

Of all the amps though, I'd still wish to have kept my TJ - it was a great, great amp.

If you read back on the Uber's design back in the day, the lower volume clean channel was set up as a channel for drive pedals. I don't think it was set up to be a full on, pristine clean channel at volumes to compete with channel 2. But, yeah, as stated above, you may have something else going on as channel 2 should have gobs of gain. Make sure the previous owner didn't slip you a 5751 or 12AT7 in one of the preamp tube positions to tame the amp a bit.

Here are my Rev2 settings on ch1 and ch2 Uber gain:

I run EMG 81/85 set on most of my guitars and this works great.

Swap in some new tubes and see what happens. Just because yours are working doesn't mean they are working to spec.

I run this combination:
v1 Tung-sol 12AX7 re-issue
v2 Shuguang 12AX7 9th gen
v3 Shuguang 12AX7 9th gen
v4 JJ EC803S
v5 Shuguang 12AX7 9th gen - balanced
v6 Shuguang 12AX7 9th gen - balanced

The Tung-sol RI and JJ ECC803S really open up the clean channel.

I tried all kinds of combination of pre amp tubes. I found the Tung Sol RI and the JJ ECC803 really opened up the clean channel, gave it a richer tone. I even swapped them with each other, but nothing touched how they sounded in this order. The gain channel sounded best with the Chinese tubes to me. For the loop and phase inverter the Chinese tubes are fine. I just went with balanced, although not needed, because they didn't cost that much more.

i am looking at your high gain settings, and man that is a ton of bass

i do think the gain needs to be cranked up to about three o clock to get the goods.

didnt get a chance to break out the tube tester.

I know it seems like a lot of bass, but it's not too much on my set-up. Nice, heavy and thick.

Here's a couple of vids with those settings for the gain channel. The only difference being I moved the gain down to 1:00 and then boost it back up to 3:00 levels with my Timmy pedal set clean for solos. Sorry about the crappy video recorder sound, but it's all I have right now. Using one of my Mesa Recto V30 4x12 cabs.

Ibanez 7-string on this one, EMG 707 pickups.
