So, I've received a trade offer: my VH4 for an Uberschall Twin Jet w/Purple Mod. Now, although the VH4 is undeniably an incredible bit of kit, I've never "bonded" with it in the same way as I have with my Herbert. So I'm tempted to make the trade and see what I think of the Uber.

Thoughts on the Uber please!

You are leaving about $1000 on the table, trade value for starters.

Like Steve said, get your dollar amounts adjusted with the other guy accordingly first. It's a cool amp, to me they remind me a lot of a rectifier. They have that same aggressive, gritty, dirty hi gain that a recto has but just a hair smoother and stronger in the mids. It's also a warmer tubish sounding amp than a recto IMHO. Partly because rectos are biased so cold anyway.

Ch2 is very heavy with a ton of gain, it's the metal channel. Channel 1 can go from clean to fairly heavy, it does have a mid heavy marshallish feel to it. Mine is also supposed to be a purple mod, and mine will do cleans.

I don't like EL34's in mine, it's just so mid heavy with 34's, that I can't dial it out at all. I plan to eventually put KT88's back in it.

Definitely check out the Uberschall Comparison Thread in the Bogner subforum. There have been some good posts and comments there. But it's definitely a really cool amp- if you change out the stock Sovtek KT88s. IMHO they chose a horrible tube to be stock on that amp. I have mine modded to accept EL34/KT88s, and I personally like Winged C 6550s in the amp. To me they have the tightness and ballsiness of the KT88s without the jagged, glassy highs. Overall the best tube type I've tried in the Twin Jet.

It's really a flexible amp, and you can get a surprising amount of tones out of it if you're willing to tweak it. Channel One can be surprisingly clean and sparkly if dialed in right, up through semi-clean crunch and into hot-rodded JCM 800 territory. Channel Two is crazy with gain, and you can get super, super saturated tones or really dry and tight metal tones depending on where you put the gain at. Experimentation is key with this amp, and it's worth the hour or so of dialing it in to find the tones you want.

It's not the Sovtek KT-88's that are changing the tone all that much.. Its the Chinese preamp tubes Bogner sends them with..Horrible for those amps. There's your jagged highs and uneven midrange..
Change them out to JJ's with a Sovtek 12AX7 WC in V1 and you'll be amazed at the tone of the Twin Jet.

I liked bogners with the Sovtek LPS across the preamp section - except for C9s in the cathode follwers. They used to ship them that way.

I personally have owned a TJ and a Rev Green Uber and liked the Green Uber way better than the TJ. The TJ was tight, WAY overly tight in my opinion, kinda not fun to play. Never fell in love with the KT88's (had same problem with a Splawn Nitro), I grew up on EL34's. I missed the slight sag in the Green Uber. The Green Uber obviously has that EL34 mid range bite to it while the TJ sounds more round. Both are stellar, just personal preference. I've heard people say the Green Uber sounds like a REALLY REALLY good angry Marshall. One cool thing with the TJ is the clean channel trick of dime'ing the gain and it sounds like a real good Marshall crunch. Plus the Green Uber is basically a one trick pony but hot sweaty hell what a trick!

I owned the rev blue and tj at the same time and i didnt like the tj and sold it.

What is the purple mod? The twin jet's used value is around $1600 vs the VH4 around double that.

Tone wise you mentioned the Herbert being a favorite or yours. In a drag race the Herbert would stomp the TJ in my opinion. Plus you already have the red channel of the XTC. I guess I am wondering what tone your trying to accomplish. I think the Twin Jet is great but not as versatile as your other amps.
