Bogus Copyright Strikes to Prey on YouTubers - Rick Beato

I posted a improv over a backing track from another YT channel (who granted the ability to use it, as long you credited them for it). I got a copyright strike from a totally different channel, who used that same backing track as a "song" on their channel. It was nuts.

I haven't posted anything like that since.

Long ago, I shot an 'unboxing' video of an amp I had received. Just happened to have Ozzy No More Tears playing on the stereo while unpacking the amp. So proud - uploaded the video. And it was flagged over night. Really???

It seems this issue is either completely unwarranted or fully deserved, depending on if one enjoys Beato’s channel or not and I’ve read all kinds of mental gymnastics over why he should have his channel shut down.

He’s citing educational use, which falls under Fair Use.

Just the fact that no one is thinking “Man, I really want to hear “Comfortably Numb”, I should look up that Beato interview with David Gilmour so I can hear it”, is enough for me to call bullshit on the copyright strike. At most he’s playing 15-20 seconds of the song and then asks the producer/musician questions about it, I don’t think you can get a clearer example of educational use.

It’s pretty ridiculous that he’s got to keep a lawyer on the payroll just to handle that shit. Youtube needs to do something with the labels to get that shit to stop. So far, not a single case has gone to court because once his lawyer responds the label shuts up. If he didn’t have money to pay for a lawyer, dude’s channel would have been long gone by now.

Some of those vids have gotten me to listen to bands I grew sick of years ago. This isn’t like Napster or file sharing where someone can get the whole song or album and never have to purchase it.

Fucking lawyers. That's where this all starts. Guess they're tired of chasing ambulances.

It’s been a weapon for quite sime time alredy. Cross someone’s road with critique, and they’ll shut your channel that way.

You can go to the court though if you care enough in such cases.

About 10 years ago I was shooting a cat vid lol. I had the radio playing quietly in the background, and unfortunately it was John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band-The Darkside. Also flagged overnight.
:ROFLMAO:

True, it's getting out of hand. One time I recorded a video while I was taking a shit. Naturally, it was from the shoulders up, but you could tell by the bathroom sink in the shot, the sounds, also I flat out said I was taking a shit while recording. The next day it was taken down and I had a warning from YouTube because Polyphia hit me with a copyright strike 😡

Hmmmm… I have been working on a set of vids covering track noise as both content and resume building to get sub gigs with touring bands.

Now, I have gotten copyright notices where I had to do revenue splits and I could care less about that but never a strike.

This will be interesting.
